“Wasteland…wonderland…underland, same thang…flying underwater…swimming under air, can’t sink…hovering….too close to the sun again, underpinned, save me…” – “Wonderland”

Artist Ariel J. recently released her album Close To The Sun. As someone who became familiar with Ariel J. through TikTok and has since kept up with her releases, Close To The Sun builds on her incredible catalog beautifully. Her music is somewhat vibey, but mostly it combines great lyrics, wonderful messages, and production that creates a world onto itself. Truly a wonderland!

Over the course of the 14 tracks, Ariel speaks from the perspective of many people of now who are seeking reflecting on self and seeking growth. From her seamless flow and light, airy imagery to her sweet vocals, she is part Hip Hop, part R&B, and part Jazz. She is reminiscent of the Hip Hop artists from the 90s that spoke on the goings-on of the world while uplifting Black people. The confidence in which Ariel assumes while making it clear that she is still living and learning provides a soundtrack for many trying to find some positivity in today’s world. She also touches on love, both romantic and self-love in a way that is honest about it’s struggles, but still aspirational. There is humor and she even touches on politics, declaring  “…down with the blood orange king and the jabberwocky”. This is an album for people looking for hope and empowerment. Her album cover declares, “Praise to the Most High God within you. Ivy will never rot with the lows of the world”. This is the type of music many of us need right now as we seek to find our way through these troubling times.

The album features appearances from Akeem Ali, Amanda Furdge, and RHYiGN. It is a great listen with no skips. Check out the album on your preferred digital streaming service and listen below to the glow88 remix featuring Akeem Ali:
