Though my heart…has been shattered and plastered and given me so many works of art…now’s the time to move on, sing a song of the strong…for the ways I’ve grown…no more dreams and fairy tales like little girls…”

I was first introduced to Vahn Black through TikTok. She came across one of those accounts that recommends music and I was instantly captivated by her vocals and sound. As a lover of R&B, Jazz, and Soul music I was drawn to the music that I heard from her. I listened to her EP “Petrichor: The Joy of Gladys Bentley” and I became a fan. Her song Headlights has been a fave since I heard it. When her new album came to notice I was very excited to hear it and she did not disappoint.

I am hesitant to make comparisons, although I know that’s how most people relate to music. I will say that her Jazz-infused soul music puts me somewhat in the mind of Nancy Wilson and Rachelle Ferell. Her voice is big and rich, while also being smooth and sweet. She is able to dive into some truly powerful depths. Her lyricism is also to be commended. Her songs speak to so many people’s experiences in relationships trying to find that one and overcome once you have realized that they are not. She sings our feelings and thoughts in such a beautiful way. The instrumentation is always giving live band and makes you feel like you’re at a dark club listening to the in-house singer croon and kill you softly with her songs. While the overall production of her songs which include full backgrounds and even a bit of choir, help to create a full experience within her songs. Walk In The Rain is certainly a good name for this album as it carries us through so many of our own experiences that make you feel like you’re having a thoughtful, rainy night.

Miss Vahn Black has not seemingly cracked into greater consciousness yet, but she is certainly an artist for those who have been complaining about a lack of music with feeling and soul. She is a full package artist who I feel confident will only continue to grow. I would love to experience her live. My favorite songs from this album are single Gotta Go, Season, Care Too Much, Mourning, and Walk In The Rain. Great music to drive around to and even some songs that you could share with someone you love. I look forward to hearing more from this incredibly talented artist. Below is one of my favorite songs from the project called Gotta Go. Please do yourself a favor and get in tune with Vahn Black, who’s album is available on digital streaming:
