For those unfamiliar, One of The Days is a buddy comedy starring Keke Palmer and SZA. The film is also produced by Issa Rae. It has been compared to movies like Friday and B.A.P.S. for good reason. It is laugh out loud funny and even sneaks in some good lessons as well.
The movie is about best friends Dreux and Alyssa, who live in a broken down building in one of LA’s rougher sides of town. Dreux is working at a diner and trying to get promoted in management, while Alyssa is a struggling artist. The countdown that marks many great comedies begins when they realize that Alyssa’s boyfriend took their rent money, giving them about 9 hours to get it or be put out of their apartment. It is a comedy of errors where it seems like everything that could go wrong, goes wrong.
As Issa Rae productions tend to be, One of The Days is a love letter to LA, showing how gentrification and struggling people can cause issues. It is a throwback to good ol’ 90s type comedies that are silly, but with heart. As the ladies struggle to find ways to make rent, a homeless sage (played by Katt Williams) tries to warn them of the dangers of getting sub-prime loans. There are also some lessons about relationships, judging a book by its cover, and the power of community. It is one of the movies that you can throw on with your friends, have some good laughs, and some good debates about what other people would do in these situations. I went into the movie not sure what to expect, but I left out having had a really good time. It feels like a good, hood comedy, which pays homage to Friday, while still being up to date and relevant. If you have not gone to see One of The Days yet, I highly recommend. It is only about 90 minutes, which is a good film length for me. With appearances from Janelle James, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and Gabrielle Dennis, it is a good Black movie.
