The Brownstone Magazine Inaugural Issue

In a time when as a Black woman I find myself often being faced with disrespect and devaluation, I have found peace and healing amongst Black women. While this  year over 300,000 Black women have lost jobs, many have been focusing on building things of our own. I have found solace in working to develop The Brownstone Magazine with an incredible community of awesomely talented Black women.

The Brownstone Magazine is a publication built entirely by Black women. It is a space curated by us to tell our stories, express our particular brand of culture, and show that Black women are a world within ourselves. A group of Black women from across the country have come together to create a platform where we can move away from the limited representation of Black women and instead show the many different expressions of Black womanhood that exist. Founded by Bailey Billings, The Brownstone Magazine was created as a demonstration of the intelligence, beauty, and wonder of Black women.

Far from monolithic, Black women run the gamut of experience, skill, and heart. We have come together to show that when a group of Black women decide to do something, not only do we do it, but we do it well. I have been incredibly inspired by the amazing women with whom I have been blessed to meet and work with while developing the magazine and corresponding platforms. This is just the beginning of what we are building up to ensure that we have respectful and accurate media representation.

I am so proud of the team and so happy to present the special inaugural edition of The Brownstone Magazine. The first issue features an interview with Texas representative Nicole Collier about her experience being locked inside of the capital building. We also have an inspiring interview with CEO Bailey Billings who gives background into the founding and intent for The Brownstone. The issue is about The Why; from why we created this magazine to the motivations and explanations behind what drives Black women in different areas of our lives.
