On Sunday the innovative Women’s Freedom Conference took place digitally. It was an inspirational experience & a great success.
The conference was broadcasted through live video feeds from across the world. Beginning at 9am eastern time & lasting until 9pm eastern time. People were able to tune in & learn, interact & support from the comfort of their own home. Those located in New York were able to go out to the final key note speech in person, while everyone else tuned in from wherever they were. It was an incredible opportunity for all.
WFC2015 was organized by Feminista Jones, Sarah Huny Young, & Melanie Dione. The conference featured many speakers who spoke on feminism, transphobia, women of color in technology, self-care, Black Lives Matter, Intersectionalism, & many other issues effecting & influenced by women of color. There were webinars, freestyle chats, poems, & extensive conversation.
I was personally touched because there were areas in which women of color are usually not included that I didn’t even realize. It occurs to me that we are so used to seeing certain areas without women of color that we often don’t see it as odd. It’s just how things are. But it does not have to be. The statement “tokenism is not diversity” has also stuck with me. The overall experience of unity & support that took place under the hashtag #wfc2015 filled a void I didn’t realize existed until this conference took place.
Thank you to the organizers & tech team behind the conference. Also thanks to sponsors SheKnows Media, Digital Undivided, Revision Path, & BSM Dot Co. It was a great success, reaching over half a million accounts across the globe. I cannot wait until next year. You may recount the conversation under the hashtag #wfc2015. You can also go to www.womensfreedomconference.com to look over videos in the on demand section & follow on Twitter @WmnFreedomConf. We need more spaces for the support & expression of women of color. We’ve certainly worked to make this site a forum for support. See you all next year!
