Last night the 23rd annual Trumpet Awards aired on TV One. It was an incredible event filled with incredible people.
The event was hosted by Laila Ali & Dolvett Quince. The show was opened with an awesome performance of by the masters of funk Con Funk Shun, Dazz Band, Brick, & the Bar Kays.
There were more phenomenal music performances by Deborah Cox, Mali Music, Kevin Ross, & Dorinda Clark Cole. There was a tribute to New Orleans featuring a jazz band, a school band, & Mystikal. The sisters of soul Leela James, Liv Warfield, & one of my personal favorites, Avery Sunshine gave great performances in their own segment & there was a tribute to The Isley Brothers featuring Calvin Richardson, Ruben Studdard, Chanté Moore, & Dave Hollister.
The Trumpet Awards gave awards to some phenomenal people doing great things in the black community. The awards were:

Community Service: Tommy Hilfiger & Guy Vickers
Business Leadership: Arnold W. Donald
Global Award: Franklin R. Wilson
Rising Star Award: Janelle Monae
Pinnacle Award: Jamie Foxx
Vanguard Award: Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice
Lifetime Achievement Award: The Isley Brothers
It was a great program with truly touching moments. Each honoree gave heart-warming speeches, particularly Jamie Foxx, who broke down in tears when he was presented the award by his daughter & nephews. It was an exceptional night.
Salute to TV One & Trumpet creator Xernona Clayton. Can’t wait to see who is honored next year. If you missed it there will be encore presentations over the next few days. Check your local listings.
