This was a very difficult article to write. We normally don’t discuss much happening in the news, but felt it was necessary to speak out about this one particular incident.
Growing up, the news has always been a “reliable source” to find out what has happened throughout the entire world and what the weather will be for the entire week. But one thing I realized after watching the news every morning before going to school at an early age was the news always reported killings in the black neighborhoods and it’s always gang related. There’s so much good deeds happening in our communities as well but never get reported (that’s a whole different conversation). Now don’t get me wrong, many shootings are gang affiliated that’s a well-known fact; however, when a child’s life has been taken away, does it matter less because the child’s parent is “gang affiliated”?
The recent story of the death of 7-year-old Amari Brown, who was shot while being outside with family while witnessing fireworks on the Fourth of July, really became a disturbance to me. It’s a tragedy that a young boy was killed while doing something so innocent that so many others was doing as well and enjoyable. But what’s really heart-breaking is how the news went from reporting such devastating news to making headlines indicating ‘that the son took the bullet that was meant for his father’. Wow, seriously? So the wrong person who killed? If it would have been the father instead, would everything have been okay then?
Now that the father’s background has been revealed, which in my opinion wasn’t even relevant in the first place for the news, law enforcers are making statements that the young boy would have been alive if his father was incarcerated. I, myself don’t know the father personally and either does the news who has been reporting the story; therefore I want to know how can ANYONE be so heartless to say that? What about all the children whose lives were taken away and their parents have a clear background? What about the young boy’s mother? Apparently her background is clear since it hasn’t been displayed. Did she deserve to lose a child since her child’s father is “gang affiliated”? Just as ridiculous I sound asking those questions, that’s exactly how the news sound reporting the things they have publicize.
What’s very interesting to me is how the father’s social media accounts were reviewed, since the news have used pictures from the father’s Instagram page, but there wasn’t enough proof to slander him. More than likely the news expected to discover weapons to be displayed on the father’s Instagram but the only “weapon” was published was a fishing pole with cash attached to it as bait but as a joke. Now I’m aware, there’s some people are reading this and saying, “well, the father still have gun possession charges against him”. That may be true but how long were those charges? And didn’t the father do his time for his alleged charge? Exactly, that doesn’t justify his child’s life being taken away.
And for the record as the news has reported, once the father became aware of his son being shot during the fireworks, he immediately took him to the hospital and was talking to his son during the entire ride there. After holding your child in your arms, having conversations with him while he’s slowly slipping away from you, who would want to cooperate with anyone after experiencing that? We seen on the news that the mother could hardly speak while embracing her son’s pillow so close in her arms.
My deepest condolences goes out to the family of Amari Brown, especially his parents, Antonio Brown & Amber Hailey. No one will understand the feeling the pain that you both are feeling. Just note that you both have gained a new Angel who is also & will forever be your son.
Let Justice be served for Amari Brown.
