Over the last few weeks, many celebrity women have fallen victim to having their phones hacked and their personal, nude photos leaked online. This has become a big problem.
First of all, many people seem to think that it is the fault of the women. “They shouldn’t be taking the pictures.” Wrong! What a person does on a phone that is supposed to be their private property is their business. Nobody has the right to break into that phone or into their memory and release those private photos to the public. These pictures are their private property. You do not lose your right to privacy because you are a celebrity. People have to stop blaming victims of crime when it happens. It’s not your fault for having something people want to steal. It’s the thief’s fault for committing a crime. It may make you feel better to think that just because you abstain from certain behaviors or take certain precautions, you cannot be victimized. The reality is that a hacker could get into your personal things and begin to leak them at any time.
As we can clearly see, the victims have all been women. No men have had their private personal photos leaked to the public. We all know from experience that just as many men have nude photos as women. I’m willing to bet that for most of these photos that were sent, there was one sent back. However, it is the women who are being splayed across timelines.
That is because a group of men have made it their personal business to hack into these women’s photos and humiliate them online for some sick reason. I don’t feel that it will make it any better to see men suffer the same fate, I am simply making a point. Because, I honestly don’t believe it would be as much of a problem if men were being victimized. A woman’s body is always shamed and policed, while a man is free to do what he pleases with his.
There are a few things that need to happen here. First of all, people need to stop circulating these pictures and going as far as to request more. Secondly, I don’t care what Apple says this is a security problem within the company and they need to work harder to protect the personal property of their clients. Furthermore, I find it very difficult to believe that there is no way to find this group and put an end to them. They’ve found people who’ve done a lot less with little information on them. This investigation needs to be taken seriously. This is a serious violation of a person’s right to privacy.
It is especially bad for women like Gabrielle Union, who is a past victim of sexual assault. To be violated in that way is horrible and to be splayed out once again in humiliation for the gratification of some disgusting men must be especially difficult for her. I hope that these women find justice and that these men are taken down very soon. It is time to stop making the nudity of women a source of shame and ridicule and stop allowing people to exploit it.
