To create a positive kick-off to spring break, Think Before You Shoot has enlisted the help of celebrities, sports figures, community leaders as well as the public to stand up against gun violence with the Red Shirt Challenge. Starting March 20 (First day of Spring), individuals will show their support for deterring these senseless shootings by donating to receive a red #TB4YS shirt. Once received they will start their challenge by signing the shirt and taking a picture with it to post to their social media using the hash tags #TB4YS #ThinkBeforeYouShoot. They will then have the option of challenging three people online to donate to start their own challenge OR they will continue their challenge by passing their signed shirt to someone else to do the same and show support for creating safer communities.
The Red Shirt Challenge is one of many campaigns from the #TB4YS organization utilized to inspire change. The red shirt is a representation of the blood shed by those who have been murdered or victimized by gun violence and the signatures are a representation of individuals using their voices to speak up for change as we prepare for the warm weather.
The signed shirts, donations and awareness raised from the Red Shirt Challenge will go towards developing Student Outreach Programs for the youth in Chicago, targeting at-risk youth in high crime communities. These programs focuses on creative writing, the visual arts and lessons to help deter the gun-violence our youth are faced with on a daily basis.
For the past several summers, the city of Chicago has been the unfortunate face of an epidemic of gun violence that has been plaguing communities around the world. During the spring/summer of 2014 in Chicago, there were an estimated 1,233 people shot and 210 people killed by the use of gun violence (April – August). According to police statistics in Chicago, during Independence Day weekend in 2014 there were more than 60 people shot and nine killed.
In order to create change, we have to think change. Think Before You Shoot is a process that can be followed well before you get possession of a gun. It’s time we come together and encourage change in our communities.
Think Before You Shoot is a non-profit organization who’s mission is to assist with attacking this epidemic that’s plaguing our city. We want to restore the value of life into the youth along with providing them with the confidence to control their success and believe in themselves. Our goal is to get individuals to think before they participate in the act of violence and take responsibility for their actions.
