Last night was the premiere of the highly anticipated series Empire. Lee Daniels’ new show starts Terrance Howard & Taraji P. Henson. Here’s what we thought about it:
K: The show definitely started off with a bang. There was a lot going on, trying to introduce everybody & set up the plot. It’s hard not to watch it & think about Hustle & Flow. It’s about a mogul who built his company on drug money & raised his three sons while their mother was in prison for the crimes that funded the company start. Now it’s time for one of the sons to take over and their mother is back to make up for lost time. Of course, that’s where it gets interesting. I appreciated that the sons were all different. There are a lot of great, memorable characters. The music was really, really good. Great singing & lyrics. It had a lot of controversial things going on. But Lee Daniels’ stuff usually does. For those who don’t know, Lee is behind The Butler, ShadowBoxer, & most famously, Precious. I loved Gabourey Sidibe & Taraji’s characters. It is definitely a must watch for Wednesday nights.
Loyal Brown: Taraji. Cookie. Taraji. Cookie. Give that woman an Oscar right now! Taraji is Empire. Taraji’s character, Cookie is literally the heart of Empire. Empire was definitely everything I anticipated it to be and some. Personally, I believe Luscious should leave his Empire to his ex-wife, Cookie. She knows how to hold it down after being incarcerated for 17 years. She still demands her respect and came home to redeem what’s hers. You gotta love her the boss that she is. Hopefully both Luscious and Cookie learn to love all three of their children equally without each choosing one to favor while poor Andre is left to defend & love himself. That’s why he’s plotting to own the Empire for him and his wife. Jamal is extremely talented, him and Hakeem would actually make a terrific music group if each parent wasn’t trying to manage each of them separately. Despite Jamal being gay, him and Jamal appear to have a close relationship with each other that Hakeem feels comfortable coming to his brother with any problems that he may be facing before he can even go to his own parents. I’m definitely excited about Empire and look forward to watching it EVERY Wednesday.
Make sure you tune in to Fox Wednesdays at 9/8c. Look for the music from the series on iTunes.
