A few days ago, we reported Chicago’s Pullman District Becomes A National Monument which is a huge honor. As we previously indicated, President Barack Obama declared the Pullman community as a National Monument at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy with many Chicagoans from politicians to students to government officials to laborers in attendance. Although we were not physically in attendance, it was brought to our attention mainly via social media that afterwards, President Obama engaged with several of the attendees holding conversations, shaking hands & even taking a quick “selfie”.
During the midst of President Obama taking what most people acknowledge as a selfie, which is when a person snaps a picture of his or her self with their camera device which is usually their cellular phones, President Obama reached in his hand while the picture was being snapped. Unfortunately what was captured appears to come across as a joke and even a sign of disrespect towards certain gang affiliations. Obviously President Obama is either reaching for the phone or just jokingly placing his hand in front of the camera. We can’t really believe that the 44th President of the United States actually discrediting one gang or even aware of his hand gesture. Instead of celebrating the fact that Chicago now has a National Monument in the Pullman district, which is a district that we as African-Americans were only allowed to work in, the President’s hand gesture appears to receive more recognition and excitement.
Unfortunately, this supposed “gang sign” is the only part that many chose to focus on. Not the historical significance of the moment, especially during Black History month, but a meaningless gesture that some people chose to make into something else. It should not take an element of drama or gossip to get people’s attention. People should be able to appreciate things as significant without turning it into a meme.
Despite how many may feel about his actions, beliefs or discussions as the leader of our country, Barack H. Obama is and will forever be our 44th President and shall be respected at all times under any situation & circumstances. We have to do better in order to be better as Americans. If we want change in the world, we first have to change ourselves.
