On June 6th, the 2nd season of Orange is the New Black premiered on Netflix. It definitely lived up to the hype for its faithful viewers.
I was one of those geeks who logged onto my Netflix at 2am Friday morning when it first premiered for the Central time zone. I watched the first 2 episodes and then and went on and went to sleep. As soon as I woke up, I went right back to watching. I binge watched the entire season Friday and woke up Saturday feeling like a zombie. I loved every minute of it though.
For those who did not watch the 1st season and are not familiar with the premise of the show, it is loosely based on the true story of Piper Kerman. She went to prison for a crime she had committed many years before while in a relationship with a woman who was a drug dealer. In the show, at the time when this all happens, Piper has moved on and is living happily with her fiancée Larry. Her past comes back to haunt her and she is sentenced to serve roughly a year in a minimum security prison. She then begins to mix with the other women who have made some poor decisions. We then begin to see how Piper’s life adjusts to prison and also the back stories for the women around her. It becomes seriously complicated when Piper realizes that her ex is also in the prison with her.
The show is truly great. It is a good reminder that any of us could make a mistake and wind up behind bars. Yes, there is some sex, but mostly it’s about how these women are not that different from you and me. It’s funny, deep and incredibly entertaining. There are so many great characters. My personal favorites are Nicole, the ex-drug addict who is very sarcastic and smart, Black Cindy who can be brash, but is seriously funny, Poussey, pronounced Poo-say, who is intelligent with a great sense of humor and a big heart, Crazy Eyes aka Suzanne, who everybody thinks is crazy, but is really just missing something, and of course Taystee, the loud, love-able singing, dancing, hilarious woman with a lot of issues, but also a lot of brains.
This season was as good, if not better, than the first. The entry of Vee definitely turns everything around. I absolutely could not stand her from the time she got there. The way she came into the picture and turned everything into a war was just awful. I hated what she turned the black women into, it was all bad. I’m glad that this season was focused less on Piper and more on the other characters. We got to see the back stories of Morello, Black Cindy, Poussey, more of Taystee, and possibly my favorite back story, Rosa, who was a true G.
I laughed a lot, but I also caught the feels a few times, especially towards the end of the season. I left it wishing that Season 3 was ready to premiere. If you have not seen the show, you really need to get into it. It really is amazing. I guarantee you will be tearing through those episodes just like the rest of us.
