Another Tuesday, another slew of releases from some great artists. I have been looking forward to this Tuesday for one release in particular, but we’ll get into that. I’ve listened to a couple of the records & here’s what I think.
This week’s must have: Janelle Monae – The Electric Lady
I have been waiting for this album for some time now. I loved Janelle’s debut, the critically acclaimed The ArchAndroid. Janelle just has a sound you know you won’t hear anywhere else. The Electric Lady definitely lived up to the hype for me. The critics seem to love it & it is being hailed by many as the album of the year. First of all, the features on this album are incredible. Of course there was Q.U.E.E.N featuring Erykah Badu, which I absolutely love. The album also features Solange, Miguel, Esperanza Spaulding & most amazingly, the legendary Prince. It’s difficult to describe the sound. It’s just Janelle. Part Funk, part Soul, part Electronica, with just a touch of Rock. She actually reminds me of Prince. My personal favorites from the album are the title track, which features Solange, Primetime, a great ballad featuring Miguel, It’s Code, Victory, Can’t Live Without Your Love, & Sally Ride. As on her last album, the songs flow seamlessly into each other. I think everybody should give it a listen. People complain that most music sounds the same, well this is definitely a different side of things. Janelle is a truly gifted artist.
2 Chainz – B.O.A.T.S II Me Time
I really didn’t feel this album much. I mean it’s 2 Chainz, but I just didnt feel it. There were a couple standouts, but overall it fell kind of flat for me. Of course I like Feds Watching. There was also Netflix, Mainstream Ratchet, Living & Black Unicorn. Particularly Black Unicorn, featuring an amazing intro by Sunni Patterson, an dope poet who I’ve liked for years. Other than that it was just kinda meh. I still love you 2 Chainz.
The Weeknd – Kiss Land
The Weeknd has put out a 10 song album. I enjoy it. It’s what you’ve come to expect from The Weeknd, smooth songs with good storytelling. Definitely a record to zone out to. It’s what I’d put on for a late night drive. A feel good record. I really like Love In The Sky, but the whole album is good.
Marques Houston also recently released a new album called Famous. Make sure to go get it. Goodie Mob has also made a comeback with their recent release, Age Against The Machine. I also recommend checking out the EP The Love Club by Lorde, featuring one of my new favorite songs, Royals.
That’s this week new releases. Go out & support & let us know what you think.
