“I see your face, you see my face…a thousand races into space…universal law never makes mistakes…baby you know…I just want to live &….do what I can to be my best…nevertheless, never settle for less…(All The Ways Love Can Feel)”
Maxwell has finally come through with the second album in his blackSUMMERS’night trilogy. It’s been a long time coming, but it was definitely worth the wait.
This year marked the 20 year anniversary of Maxwell’s debut album Urban Hang Suite, so it is appropriate that he would choose this time to come back with his new effort. Many have been impatiently waiting since he first announced the trilogy 7 years ago. Anyone who may have been concerned that Maxwell’s effort wouldn’t be worth it can set your mind at ease. blackSUMMERS’night is exactly what you want from Maxwell; great vocals, beautiful lyrics, & production I can’t wait to hear live. The evolution of Maxwell over the years is complete in this album. There is that good ol’ neo-soul, but with hints of Jazz, Funk, & Blues. He gives the ballads that we all love him for, but also some more upbeat tracks for a good groove. He speaks about love & touches on what has been going on in the word. No features, just Maxwell. The album is a great one to roll through, but there are some standouts. The track I have had on loop since hearing it is 1990x. It is vintage Maxwell. The whole album gets a big thumbs up & many listens from me.
blackSUMMERS’night is currently available everywhere. It is a must listen. Listen to 1990x below:
