“Every n*gga should be a star…when the four corners of the cocoon collide…you’ll slip through the cracks hoping that you’ll survive…gather your wind, treasure a deep look inside…are you really who they idolize?…to pimp a butterfly…”(Wesley’s Theory)
Last night we were all pleasantly surprised when Kendrick Lamar’s new album came out, a whole week early. To Pimp A Butterfly set the internet on fire.
“It’s more to feed your mind…water, sun & love…the one you love…all you need…the air you breathe…”(How Much A Dollar Cost)
The album follows the first single i & The Blacker The Berry in being funk-infused & speaking to the truths of black culture. It puts me in the mind of an Outkast album. It is complete, the production is big & wonderful & of course the lyricism is there. K dot really gave us one.
The album features George Clinton, Thundercat, Bilal, Anna Wise, Snoop Dogg, James Fauntleroy, Ronald Isley, & Rapsody. The songs are strong & on time, but not in time, meaning they’re in tune with what’s going on right now, but it’s not like anything else at the moment. It’s nostalgic, but fresh. It is one of those albums that will always sound fresh. It’s the funk in it.
“Dark as the midnight hour…or bright as the mornin sun…give a f*ck about your complexion…I know what the Germans done…sneak me through the back window…I’m a good field n*gga…I made a flower for you out of cotton just to chill with ya…”(Complexion(A Zulu Love))
Everybody needs to listen to this. It’s so important. I can’t even pick out favorites. Just put it on & let it ride. It uncompromising, innovative, powerful, & incredibly cinematic. Just close your eyes & envision it. Get the album on iTunes, Google Play, or stream it on Spotify right now. Kudos to Kendrick for this incredible piece.
“When the sh*t hit the fan is you still a fan…when the sh*t hit the fan is you still a fan…”(Mortal Man)
