“They say sing what you know…but I’ve sung what they want…some folks do what they’re told…but baby this time I won’t…we’ll look through that door, I know the truth from lies…some things I’ve done before I can’t justify…( I Know Better)”
John Legend is back with his 5th studio album, Darkness and Light. Per usual, John gives us everything we didn’t even know we needed.
Ever soulful, ever melodic, John adds onto an already incredible catalog with this latest addition. John Legend has always reminded us of classic Soul & R&B, yet he is still able to make music that is fresh. His songs are heartfelt & his powerful voice always soothes the soul. One thing that I can say about 2016 is that it has given us some incredible music & John has kept that trend going with Darkness and Light. It’s equal parts inspirational, sensual, & hypnotic. He starts out with a ballad informed by his experiences & goes on to sing some truly unforgettable tracks that range in subject from love to fatherhood. He dedicates a song to his infant daughter Luna as well as to love in general. The album feels good & it’s over far too soon. Beyond giving us songs to dance, love, & live through, he also gives some stellar collaborations that I never would have thought to put together, but work brilliantly. John combines powers with Chance The Rapper, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, & Miguel for 3 gorgeous tracks that I needed so badly. If you’re a fan of John Legend, if you’re a fan of Soul music, if you’re a fan of good music, you need to hear this album.
