“Hear ye, hear ye…anybody that can listen, come listen…having faith in the rest of you…will be an amazing awakening…ego reshaping…(Wild Cookie)”
I was so excited when it hit midnight because I knew that it was July 24th and that meant Jill Scott’s new album Woman was upon us. Being an extreme fan who has had to endure 4 long years of anticipation, I was over the moon. And as always, Jill has presented something more than worth the wait.
As a whole, the album Woman is a deep, expansive, beautiful, & complex album, indeed much like a woman. Full bodied, clever, & sentimental, this particular collection is a glorious contemplation of womanhood & another strong display of Jill Scott’s artistry. This year made 15 since Jilly from Philly blasted on the scene with her debut album Who Is Jill Scott. Over the course of those 15 years Jill has given 4 powerful albums full of anthems & songs that I can attach to many emotions and memories. With this 5th album, she has continued in that tradition.
As an artist, Jill has always brought it all, from the production to the lyrics to that voice. The musicianship & lyrics on this album are so strong & wonderful they wash over you & sweep you into a space away from it all & what is left is a wonderful listening experience that reminds you of why you love music to begin with. It’s soulful & reminiscent of so many classic sounds, while still being fresh & inventive. She continues to combine spoken word with deep messages into the stories in which she tells. She evokes a great deal of emotion & imagery that fills you up & scrubs you clean at the same time. There is not a single song that need be skipped. It all flows seamlessly together. On the one hand you want to stop & put songs on repeat, but at the same time you can’t wait to get to the next one. From Wild Cookie onward you’re teleported. She explores the different kinds & stages of love, while relating to a woman’s experience of life in relation to herself as well as to the one’s they love. It is honest, inspiring, aspiring, poetic, & all set to an incredibly infectious groove. She even takes a moment to celebrate motherhood with a touching tribute to her son Jett called Back Together & creates a new word for love on JahRayMeCoFaSoLa. There is only one collaboration on the whole 16 track album, which is with BJ the Chicago Kid on the breathtaking concluding track Beautiful Love.
Per usual, Jill has not disappointed. Woman is a supreme must listen. Get this album anyway you can. It is an absolute necessity in your music collection. Catch Jill when she’s in your city, she, her background singers, & her band are incredible live. Below is Jill on Big Tigger’s podcast BT Radio giving the previews and background on Woman:
