“Oh tenderness…kiss is number one on the list…with a kiss have you eating out her palm…she’s sweet & calm…can calm the storm that’s inside of ya…wouldn’t lie to ya…that’s the definition of a woman…(Definition of a Woman)”
Modern-day Soul man Dave Hollister is back with his new album The MANuscript. It is everything that I have always loved about Dave Hollister.
As soon as I turned the album on, I got hooked by a very pleasant groove. If you know anything about Dave Hollister, you know the vocals are always right, but it’s always more than that. The music is always just as good. He’s a soul man who is always singing about what’s real. He’s a great storyteller & definitely reps well for Chicago. One of my favorite albums from the 90s is Dave’s Ghetto Hymns, which to me is a classic, & this new album puts me in the mind of it. From great love songs to a little baby mama drama & even a tribute to all he learned at the barbershop. He tells women straight up either leave him or let him cheat. He is no-holds barred & the production provides a great backdrop for the lyrics. The only feature on the album is Angie Stone. It’s soulful, bluesy, funky, & just plain good ole R&B. Dave, like Anthony Hamilton, BJ The Chicago Kid, Anderson .Paak, Ro James, & Maxwell, has added more great male R&B outside of the Trap Soul realm & taken it back to the 90s neo-soul. I’d recommend it to everybody. There is not one bad track on the whole thing.
The MANuscript is currently available everywhere. You will also be able to see Dave on tour as well as in Love Jones The Musical the theater production also starring Musiq Soulchild, Chrisette Michele, Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem Devaughn, & MC Lyte.
