“Do what you want…let me in…to your heart…can’t stand it…backhanded…they wanna see us falling apart…you know that…I love you…(Me and Your Mama)”
Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover is back with a new album entitled “Awaken, My Love!”. It’s not at all what you’d expect, a very pleasant surprise.
For this project Childish took it back to late 60s/70s Funk. The songs put me in the mind of Bootsy Collins, Parliament, Funkadelic, Rick James, & Jimi Hendrix. A lot of heavy electric guitar riffs, some catchy, rocking vocals & deep down, supercharged lyrics. It’s almost like Rock at some points, through the whole thing it’s like a time capsule. Between the far-out vocal cadences & the rich production, it’s suited to Studio 54 or some other neon colored dark club. It’s trippy & yet still down to earth enough to reach people. It could’ve gone over every one’s heads, but it feels honest & raw so it’s not too cerebral or out of touch. This could easily be a soundtrack to a blaxploitation film, with it’s storytelling & lively instrumentation. It almost sounds like something Andre 3000 would make. Childish has always been off to his own side of things with his music. Nothing he ever releases can be placed alongside other music out at the time. He’s not afraid to experiment & push the boundaries. Each of his projects stand alone. It looks like the show Atlanta is not the only gem he has given us this year.
