“My creator gave me the gift to create…& this mind of mine apply to our escape…in an atmosphere that would hold our weight…if I leave from here I’ll call when I’m safe…(Big K.R.I.T.)”
Big K.R.I.T. has just released his album 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time. It is a double album that every Hip Hop or just good music fan should listen to.
For some reason Big K.R.I.T., in spite of being one of Hip Hop’s most creative & talented artists, has remained under the radar of mainstream Rap. He’s never truly had a megahit & he does not come up much in Rap conversation with most people. There are those who are avid fans & hold him up amongst the best out now & I don’t blame them. K.R.I.T. represents for that Southern Hip Hop that is soulful, potent,& dripping with swag & meaning. From the minute I hit play on this album I began to feel it. I was immediately brought into K.R.I.T.’s world. Hailing from Mississippi, he is definitely not in one of the major demographics for artists, yet he continues to be one of the more important voices in Southern Hip Hop. As both an artist & a producer, K.R.I.T. is able to create big, deep sounds. His drawl can lull your mind while his lyrics paint a picture for you. Whether with his more lowkey records or one with 808s that will knock in any car’s speakers, he brings you back to the sounds of UGK, OutKast, & Scarface. On this project he gives you a lot to think about & a lot to feel. It’s full of anthems that can make anybody feel like a Southern player. It’s colorful, bold, & just feels good. The album features appearances by T.I., Lloyd, UGK, CeeLo Green, Sleepy Brown, Joi, Jill Scott, Keyon Harrold, Bilal, Robert Glasper Jr, Kenneth Whalum, & Burniss Earl Travis II. It is honestly one of my favorite Hip Hop albums of the year. It is something that people need to hear, especially in this climate. It’s like Soul Food for the ears. Hopefully it will get him the respect he deserves.
