“If it’s a miracle…to be alive & well…if we fail…we feel we’d be okay…(Miracle)”
Last night, Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment blessed us with Surf. Many are familiar with The Social Experiment because of Chance The Rapper. Most of Chance’s recent music has been with The Social Experiment, which began as his backing band. It has since grown into a collective.
The Social Experiment is a 4 part songwriting/production unit made up of Chance The Rapper, Donnie Trumpet aka 21 year old Nico Seagal, producer Nate Fox, & Peter Wilkins aka Peter Cottontale on keyboards. They are an independent unit insistent on giving mostly free music. What they have put together in this album is truly great.
This time Donnie Trumpet is standing out with his horn. There is a lot going on in this album, but in a good way. There are so many elements at play. There is Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz, Alternative, Funk, a bit of Dance. Sometimes the songs are split & you get 2 for one. There is Chance’s usual singing to rapping style that is fast, yet smooth. It really is a melting pot that works to create its own genre of free, easy music. Although the artists are from Chicago, Surf definitely is reminiscent of an ocean atmosphere.
There are quite a few artists featured on the album. Along with the collective there is Busta Rhymes, B.O.B., Janelle Monae, J. Cole, Big Sean, Jeremih, BJ The Chicago Kid, Raury, Quavo, King Louie, Joey Purp, & Erykah Badu. The whole album flows together beautifully & creates a great warming, summer feeling.
