Last night D’Angelo & The Vanguard performed on Saturday Night Live. The performance was absolutely incredible.
For their first performance the sung the sing Really Love. It goes “When you call my name…when you love me gently…when you’re walking near me…doo doo wah, I’m in really love with you…I’m in really love with you”. D’Angelo came out looking like an urban cowboy & giving everything needed.
But then they came back out & performed The Charade. Everything about this song is yes. D’Angelo wore a hoody & the band wore shirts that said I Can’t Breathe & Black Lives Matter. There was also a chalk outline on a stage. As they sang with their fists in the air I couldn’t help but think of what a perfect way that was to start Black History Month.
Here are some of the lyrics to the song:
“Crawling through a systematic maze to demise…pain in our eyes…strain of drowning wading through the lies…Degradation so loud that you can’t hear the sound of our cries…All the dreamers have gone to the other side of the road where we relay on…Inundated with media, virtual mind f*cks in streams…
All we wanted was a chance to talk
‘Stead we only got outlined in chalk
Feet have bled a million miles we’ve walked
Revealing at the end of the day…the charade”
Now you can see why it was such a powerful statement. Incredible performance by D’Angelo & The Vanguard. If you have not heard their album Black Messiah yet, you must do that. Especially for Black History Month.
