Thursday night, the Taste of Chicago was electrified with great performances. The concert-goers, both paid & free, definitely got a good show. The electric lady was definitely electric that night.
It all began with Gary Clark Jr. & his great band. He played a variety of guitars & sang beautifully. He had the place rocking.
After Gary’s performance, they changed the stage to black & white & out came the petite fireball Janelle Monaé & her incredible band. She came out blazing with songs like Give Em What They Love, Dance Apocalyptic, Sincerely Jane, Q.U.E.E.N, & Electric Lady. She threw it back with great renditions of James Brown’s I Got You , Jackson Five’s I Want You Back & ABC, & Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy. She took it to church with an awesome & passion performance of Victory. She then took a moment out to hold up signs that read Stop The Violence & Stop Killing Our Babies. She then dedicated Cold War & Tightrope to the city of Chicago. She also performed Primetime & Come Alive.
At one point in the show, she climbed off stage, picking up a little girl as she passed through the audience. As the crowd closed in, she climbed on the back of one of her band members & ran around through the crowd back onto the stage. She then got the crowd involved, showed off her band & background singers, moonwalked all over the stage, & left the crowd in a frenzy. It was an awesome display.
It was a great show overall. We even ran into Chuck Lightning, one half of Deep Cotton, who are a part of Janelle’s Wondaland Art Society. It was an all-around great day.
