We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Billboard Songwriter/Producer…James Worthy! James Worthy has worked with many artists such as Sara Stokes from Making The Band, Yung Berg, Truth Hurts, Robin S. Yo Gotti & more. James Worthy will also be making making guest appearances on the new BET show, From The Bottom Up. Lets get to know James Worthy…
CITMI: Hi James. How’s it been going? How have you been?
James W.: I’m great…I’m great. I’m blessed. Can’t ask for nothing more.
CITMI: That’s great to hear. So take us back to the day when you decided to become a producer. Do recall the artist & the song you first produced?
James W.: Well, when I first started – of course there were indy artists, rappers & singers who were just trying to get on just like I was so I kind of started that route & then when I got into the industry professionally, I believe I started working with Yung Berg – I think that was my first industry placement. Actually before that, there was a artist his name was [Markice] Kesan Moore. He’s in the movie ATL with T.I. & Big Boi. & he’s been on the Walking Dead & a couple of other shows. I think we had a nice little street record that we put out & that kind of gave me some notoriety as well. Pretty much those two were like my industry start.
CITMI: As you indicated you’ve worked with many artists before. Can you name a few artists & songs you’ve produced that many would be most familiar with?
James W.: I worked with artists from Yung Berg, Bobby Brown, Truth Hurts, Robin S, Future, Yo Gotti…so many artists. I produced a record for Yung Berg called Electric Disco. It’s really big out in LA – in the mixtape era, I guess I can say. I did a record for Truth Hurts called Fight 4 Love. I did a record for Sara Stokes from Making The Band called Sneak Peek which had Babs on it. I did the Yo Gotti record – co-produced Rihanna record called Rihanna. You know, so many records.
CITMI: Very impressive. With that being said, who are 3 artists that you haven’t worked with but would love to work with?
James W.: Yeah…there’s a couple of them. I’m a big fan of Kanye West. A big fan of Frank Ocean. Artists like Joe, Eryah Badu – I’m really big on tones & distinctive voices. So if you have that distinctive voice for me to really get in tune of what type of artist you are verses you sounding like someone else, I really want to work with that person.
CITMI: We talked about a lot of music that you produced. Lets talk about songs that you have written for other artists that we’re familiar with.
James W.: Well yeah…I’ve written for Bobby V. before. I’ve written for Robin S. before. I’ve written for Bobby Brown Jr. which is Bobby Brown’s son. There’s a lot of artists in the UK that I worked with as well. There’s a guy out there who I worked with his name is Trevor Wesley – I’ve done some work with him before. It really depends on what I got going on.
CITMI: Makes sense. We’re not ones who gossip or anything but we heard that you’ll be making an appearance on an upcoming BET show called From The Bottom Up. Can you tell us a little about the show & the role you’ll be playing?
James W.: The show is of course called From The Bottom Up. It’ll be airing on BET & Centric January 16th. And pretty much, I’ll be featured on the show with one of my clients, her name is Sara Stokes from Making The Band. She’s the cast member on the show. Basically, you guys will be seeing us in the studio working on her latest single which is Sneak Peek. Just showing the relationship that we have & how we work together in the studio – and just focusing on the craft.
CITMI: Congratulations to you both on that. Are there any additional roles we can expect to see play on any other TV shows?
James W.: For right now, that’s what we’ve already filmed but I am going to be working on another TV show entitled MTV Hip Hop Hustlers which I think they start preparing for that – we start filming for that in February, I believe. So I’ll be filming for that. Then right after that I’ll be working on another show for Bravo that’s more of a music judging type of show – so I’ll be filming for that probably in April of 2016. And doing a lot of commericals overseas & all kind of different things.
CITMI: You’ve given us a lot already, but are there any additional exclusives that you can share with us?
James W.: Yeah…I actually have a new single with B Angie B – if everybody doesn’t remember her, she was working with MC Hammer back in the day. She was pretty much his protege. She had a lot of hits in the 90s for House Music, so we have a new single releasing January 22nd called Shake. So that’ll be out really soon. Sara single Sneak Peek, we have the official video releasing next month – actually I believe, I’m not too sure yet but I think they will be premiering the video on the reality show as well. Be on the lookout for that. Me & Robin S have a brand new dance remix called Blessing Me which will be on the Dance Charts next month. I have a new record with Bobby V. – Bobby Valentino & Stokes. Just a lot of things.
CITMI: How can the people reach out to you on social media site such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & etc.?
James W.: Everybody can follow me on Instagram @kingjamesworthy. Twitter it’s @kingjamesworthy. Facebook it’s King James Worthy. You can also Google me as well – I pop up. And if you want to hit me directly for business, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
