Last night Issa Rae’s Insecure premiered on HBO. It is everything I needed it to be & more.
Now I, like most, couldn’t wait for last night’s premiere so I watched it on HBO Go ahead of time. I actually watched it a few times. I have been a fan of Issa Rae ever since I first came across the brilliance of Awkward Black Girl, the youtube series which launched her to superstardom. The show was hilarious, irreverent & me. I am awkward black girl & she is me. As an introverted, self-conscious Black girl trying to figure out how to navigate every day social interactions, I immediately felt a kinship to Issa & her characters. I, like many other fans, have been waiting to see more of the series since the second season ended. A few years ago it was announced that she was working on a show for HBO & I was geeked to see what she had in the works. I hoped that it would be like ABG, if not exactly, then at least mostly. And I was not disappointed.
The characters & setting are different, but Insecure still remains true to ABG. Insecure is about Issa, an incredibly awkward black woman who is turning 29, works for a non-profit called We Got Y’all which is set up for inner city kids & run by an out of touch white woman. Issa is the token black person on staff & as if work wasn’t awkward enough, she is in a 5 year relationship with her boyfriend Lawrence, who doesn’t work or really leave the apartment. She blows off steam by making up hilariously, aggressive raps. Facing down her last year in her 20s, she thinks it’s time for a change. She talks this over with her best friend Molly, who appears perfect on the outside, successful & well-liked, except by the men she tries to date. She is frustrated by what she feels is making no one want to marry her. Issa takes her out to make her feel better, but really to meet up with her ex after getting frustrated with Lawrence & kinda, sorta dumps him. They go to an open mic where Issa reconnects with Daniel & performs a song which embarasses & infuriates Molly. Issa ends up leaving the angry Molly to go see Daniel, who after a kiss informs her he’s not looking for a relationship. She finds her way back to Molly’s to make up & hideout for a while. Alongside Issa, the show stars Yvonne Orji & Jay Ellis. It is directed by Melina Matasoukas & music consulting & supervision by Raphael Saadiq & Solange Knowles. The show is funny & relateable. It comes on Sunday nights at 10:30/9:30c & you definitely want to add it to your list of must-see shows. It is another in this amazing fall line-up of Black shows.
