Affirmative action has been debated ever since it began. Many people continue to hold that it gives unfair advantage to Black people. I beg to differ.
First of all, let’s understand, affirmative action is not the ability to show up, flash my skin & get hired. Affirmative action is not simply forced diversity in the work place. Affirmative action means you cannot NOT hire me because I’m black. If I walk in as a qualified candidate, I deserve to be truly considered for the position. I should not have to fear that I will not because the company would rather hire someone white. It is not an advantage, it is evening the playing field.
People love to act as if discrimination is a myth. People would never miss out on opportunities because of the color of their skin. Obviously you just have to work harder, right? Unfortunately that is not true.
Now with that in mind, do certain institutions use affirmative action as an excuse to just bring in enough black & brown faces to avoid appearing discriminatory? Absolutely. They’ll “give” the black person or the woman or whatever the job because they need more diversity. That’s their interpretation of affirmative action. However, on average, being black can hardly be seen as an advantage.
There are those who feel minorities are taking “their” jobs. The fact that they have already decided it is their job shows that they are entitled & privileged. Often times these are mediocre people who would rather blame the people they feel less worthy than consider they were not qualified. To look at a black person in a certain position & decide they are only there because of affirmative action shows that you are prejudiced. As shown particularly over the last year or so, being black is nobody’s field day. Black people are not walking around flashing their skin & getting rewarded.
But of course there will always be opposition & having a black president gives people a false sense of how far black people have come. We still have work to do. You can work as hard as you like, but what difference will it make if people look at you & your name & decide you are not as good. This isn’t about quotas, this is about justice. Although being forced into a working environment is not pleasant, what is the alternative? Throwing up your hands & taking whatever job you can get? That’s not fair. So affirmative action is still necessary. Any person who resents that, you’re welcome to find another solution.
But those are just my thoughts. What do you all think? Is affirmative action fair?
