The first part of this epic weekend took place yesterday at the Lacuna Artist Loft Studio. Demi Lobo hosted both the Industry and Celeb Mom Panels, which were both very informative and entertaining. We found out a lot of the information that was given extremely helpful, we took notes ourselves. The first panel was the Celeb Mom Panel, which consisted of Leah Oduro-Kwarten, Gwenda Starling and Pamela Lucas. Kandi Conda aka KC also informed us on a few things about her being a manager/mom. We had the opportunity to ask Mrs. Starling how important it was for her to be a part of the Celeb Mom Panel. “Despite being really busy everyday with everyday things in life this is very important because with the kids having education behind them now, they need to know what they are getting ready to get into when it comes to the music industry. This is also a good networking experience for moms and their children to get together to share their experiences to have a better life overall.” We also had the opportunity to ask Mrs. Oduro how important it was for her to be a part of the Celeb Mom Panel. “Its very important first of all the support. I love Demi and of course her mom and what they’re doing, I think is letting not only the moms but giving the kids a chance with their talents…” Gwenda Starling indicated. Pamela expressed the importance of not pressuring your child to do anything they not passionate about and gave useful information about auditioning.
The industry panel consisted of industry attorney Exavier Pope, Atlantic Recordings’ midwest rep, Lee Johnson, De’borah Garner from The Voice & Arab, Souljah Boy’s partner in crime. They all had alot of great nuggets of wisdom to provide. Lee had a whole lot to say. He talked alot about the numbers push & how to make yourself a hot commodity. He had many great quotables. One of which was how radio stations aren’t really there for the music, they are there to sell advertising, the music just keeps you around so that you hear them. He also touched on how the problem in Chicago is that the people here haven’t formed our own industry to get our music out. Exavier Pope spoke about being able to sell yourself & getting the right people behind you. He emphasized being smart & not being afraid to go to the experts to help you make it. On the otherside of things was De’borah. She clearly loves her city & is determined to help elevate the talent of the city. She spoke about being yourself & knowing your market. She will be holding an event October 1st at the Checkerboard Lounge for talented people to have an opportunity to show what you’re made of. Arab spoke about how he & Soulja Boy started out as teenagers making songs & videos in the living room. They put it on Youtube & it took off, just like that. He talked about how little they really knew & traveling the world. They figured out the trends & worked them. They were some of the first to really use Youtube to launch a career. Arab is now working on his own music.
Last night was a great time with some great people & that will continue tonight at Demi Lobo’s 5th Annual Most Talented Under 12 competition at the DuSable Museum at 6pm. Come out & support. Demi Lobo will be hosting, De’borah Garner will be a judge, & Arab will be performing. And of course Can I Talk My Ish will be in attendance. You’ll never know what else you might see. So come kick it with us!
