Tish Hyman is a singer from the Bronx who has recently been in Chicago for a project. Tish is largely known for her song Subway Art. Well at the moment Tish is about a lot more than music.
Being in the city for the project, Tish has come across a major problem which she is looking to solve ASAP. While in the city, particularly the South Side, Tish realized that there was a lack of access to supermarkets. There are some chains of grocery stores in the area, however, they are located at as much as 5 & 10 miles for many of the people in the community. What is left to them are the small quick marts, many of them liquor stores, which sell mostly unhealthy, processed foods, such are chips, soda, ramen noodles & the like. This makes this area a food desert.
For those who have never heard the term food desert, what it means is that a particular area lacks fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful foods. The people in the neighborhood are not able to go up the street to the store and shop for the food that is good for them. These areas are typically low income. There are no farmers’ markets or real health food stores, just mostly convenience stores which sell microwavable or quick foods, which are not truly good for you. These are also areas where a large amount of fast food restaurants can be found. The effects on the community can be very negative.
Not only does this lack of whole foods lead to obesity & diet-related diseases, it can also lead to problems in the body’s development, behavioral problems, and other issues which can be drawn from inadequate nutrition. First Lady Michelle Obama addressed this as a part of her Let’s Move initiative and has even developed a Food Desert Locator. This is a problem not only on Chicago’s South Side, but in areas like it across the country.
In response to this alarming problem, Tish Hyman has started a GoFundMe to raise the cost of a market on Chicago’s South Side. This market will be just the beginning in a movement to tackle Food Deserts across the nation. Any amount that you can contribute will be helpful in providing the necessary healthy foods to Chicagoans in the area so that they can improve their diet and become overall healthy individuals.
Thank you to Tish Hyman for taking her compassion for our city to another level by not only identifying a problem, but working to solve it. You can donate to this GoFundMe campaign at www.gofundme.com/w3aahw.
