We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Singer…James Benton!!! James Benton is an R&B Singer that knows and understands the true meaning of being a singer. His musical journey began at an early age as a member of the church choir which later brought upon additional music opportunities for him on a R&B level. James has been apart of several festivals, tours and even sung background for artists such as Trey Songz, Mario, Jennifer Hudson, and that’s only to name a few. Lets get to know James Benton…
3 Voices: Introduce yourself to the world. Let the people know who James Benton is and what James Benton does.
James Benton: I’m James Benton…I’m singer, songwriter & artist. I have been doing that professionally since the age of 17. That’s pretty much who I am…singer, songwriter, producer/artist that’s been singing professionally since I was 17…traveled the world singing and making my stamp on the world through song.
3 Voices: What inspired you to become an artist?
James Benton: Actually my family…well most of my family is musically inclined. So they all have some type of music inspiration. So I came up in a musical family…I grew up in church, singing in church in different choirs. Eventually I kind of emerged from all of that and went to what gave me more passion…which was like singing on the solo side and also being able to sing with other artists as well.
3 Voices: Who are some artists that have influenced your music career?
James Benton: Basically, the ones who I worked with…well I haven’t worked with all of them yet. Tank, Usher, Mario, Joe…basically I’m really inspired by those who can really actually sing. My guy Willie, from Day 26…you know every artist that’s out and really have some type of like [pitch]. I also, me personally, I really always go for a artist that can really prefect their craft and really own their craft and could really sing. So I am really attracted and inspired by those who really do their artistry and do it well. So those are some of the artists that really inspires me to keep going and that I look up to.
3 Voices: What makes James Benton stand out from most singers? What are some things you typically sing about?
James Benton: I basically sing about the same thing that all artists sing about. What stands out about me as far as from other artists is I’ve done shows plenty shows where I’m singing with the guitar player while a painter is actually painting the different things that I am talking about in the song. So those are the kind of the things that I like to do that kind of set me apart from other artists. Also, one of the other things I do as well that really, really got me wrapped up to R&B music is [performing] with a actual live band…singing. I don’t perform with tracks with the DJ because it takes away the essences of the music that R&B brings and the feeling that R&B brings. I kind of just try to stay within that lane…I know most artists are now doing that, like they are trying to come back to doing that but I always been doing that for the like longest time now. Those are the kind of the things that keep that set me apart from different artists especially the ones, as I stated before singing exclusively with a painter painting the description with what I’m talking about as far as music.
That’s some of the things that I try to do as far as my brand, as a person, singer, songwriter, artist…I try to do that to separate myself. You don’t really get that too much and that’s some out of the box thinking.
3 Voices: You previously mentioned a few artists that you have had the liberty to work with. If given the opportunity to collaborate with any three artists, who would they be and why?
James Benton: I would say Usher, Tank, Mario and myself. Like I said before, I’m actually inspired by those that really, really own their craft. Mario is a good singer. Usher is a good singer. Tank is a good singer. But individually they own their craft in different elements, [prefectively] from Mario side of defense…Tank, he is such an amazing musician, producer and we all know Usher as…well I don’t know if it’s safe to call him the “King of Dance” but he is amazing as far as just dancing and also his vocals are like impeccable as well. All three of those guys, I think would be my ultimate collaboration.
3 Voices: Tell us about your upcoming EP? As of now, is there an official release date?
James Benton: Upcoming EP is Love, Sex and Parties. basically I wrote about three different movements that I experienced in a time period of my life. Traveling, being on tour and doing some things with others artists. Just writing from life’s [journey], and that’s basically what it is. I’ve discovered that I’ve been in love with women…I’ve been in love before, we all have been in love before in sometimes you go through the acts of sex and different things of that nature. I also partied too…I did all those things. So that was the idea that I wrote for on my EP: Love, Sex & Parties.
As of right now, there’s not a official release date actually we’re looking to release on next year…the first quarter of next year. You just want to make sure that the timing is right; I have other records that we possibly will be releasing before the actual release date…maybe two more before the release. It’s not one more before the release.
3 Voices: Tell us about your single, Flat Line.
James Benton: We just released a single which is called Flat Line and that record will be on the EP. Flat Line is basically a record that really explains one of the encounters that I had and wrote from. If anyone has seen the video, it’s real artistic. I didn’t want to be cliché when I shot the video…I wanted something that was going to be different, something that was going to tell the story without me being explicit. I think that any artistry…as an artist that is something that you would always like to do. You can tell a story without being explicit and being vaguer. That’s what I kind of like to do with my records especially with my visuals. Being able to tell or paint a story and not being vaguer or disrespectful or explicit…that’s what FlatLine is. It’s basically what the video is about… it gives away what happened in a scenario that I was with the woman I was dating. It’s a real scenario that happened in my life…well actually she didn’t pass away…it’s a song about you going back and forth with an individual and you know it’s not working out but the love is so strong and the attraction is so strong that every time you see that individual, something is bound to go down. In essences, that’s what happened…we end up falling for each other every time we see each other.
3 Voices: What’s next for you? Are there any exclusives you can share with us?
James Benton: What’s next for me…I’ve just been offered actually on today, to do some piloting. There’s a pilot show that’s getting ready to being birth right now that I been asked to start being apart of. That’s the brand new thing that I have in front of [me] today.
3 Voices: How can the people reach out to you on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram & etc.?
