We were fortunate to talk ish with Chicago’s very own…B~Free!!! Although B~Free was born right here in Chicago, she was raised in Milwaukee where she discovered a lot of her music talents. B~Free has a soulful and artistic sound for a woman of her age and definitely doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Let’s get to know B~Free…
3 Voices: Introduce yourself to the people. Let them know exactly who B~Free is and what B~Free does.
B~Free: My name is B~Free & I’m a 21st century Renaissance Woman. I am a singer, songwriter, producer & musician from the Midwest, with a main concentration in the Neo-Soul/R&B genre.
3 Voices: What actually inspired you to sing? Who are some of your musical influences?
B~Free: I was inspired to sing at a very young age. I grew up in a musically gifted family; my parents both played in a band & were singers & musicians themselves. They always encouraged me & kept me in music (I first started playing music with a little tinker toy piano they bought me when I was 2 years old!) But I’d say the moment I knew I wanted to be a singer was from watching Brandy on TV as a little girl. She was the epitome of awesomeness to me & I wanted to be exactly like her lol I also really enjoyed the feeling that I’d get from performing. I knew that was something that I’d want to experience forever.
I’d mark Brandy as one of my earliest musical influences, but there were a slew of others. Because of the eclectic nature of my household, I grew up listening to the likes of Anita Baker, Earth Wind & Fire, Parliament, Fishbone, No Doubt, Toni Braxton, etc. As I grew up I started to develop a specific taste & was greatly influenced by Neo Soul artists like Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild & Vivian Green.
3 Voices: How would you describe your sound of music? What would you like for people to get from your music?
B~Free: I’d best describe my sound as authentically soulful & honest. It’s definitely a combo of the different R&B, Soul & Hip Hop influences I’ve had over time. Everything that I create comes straight from the heart & I want listeners to truly receive that when they hear my work.
3 Voices: Your most recent video you have out is from your single, 9 to 5 remix which features Klassik. How did that collaboration come about and what made you decide to revamp the 90’s inspired 9 to 5?
B~Free: Well the original song “9 to 5” was on my first project Open Mic, Open Heart. The musical nature of that track was already heavily influenced by 90s music. At times it sounds like something you’d hear on an Aaliyah album lol I decided to do the remix because it’s one of the more fun songs on the album & I wanted it to reach a new audience. I knew that I wanted to keep the instrumentation within the same style. I’m a huge Kendrick Lamar fan & whenever I’d listen to his song “Members Only (Blow My High)” I’d end up singing 9 to 5 over it because it fit so well. The remix is just a clever mixture of the two songs.
As far as the Klassik collaboration, it was truly an honor waiting to happen for me. He & I went to high school together so I knew that he was an extremely talented & original musician within his own right. We’ve done some other work together recently as well, so when I decided to put a rap verse in the remix, he was the first person I went to. He was really moved by the subject matter of the song because he finished the verse rather quickly lol After that, the video came together very well with the help of my videographers Jessica Estelle Huggins & Jovan Leslie Monique & it was a fun & creative experience.
3 Voices: Who are some artists you would like to work with?
B~Free: I’m always open to working with anyone who creates quality music. But I would be very honored to work with some who I’m very moved by right now. I’d love to work with Jill Scott, Janelle Monae, Esperanza Spalding & Brandy. All of these women are incredible artists & people, & it would mean the world to me to have that experience. I’d also very much like to work with Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy, Lalah Hathaway & Musiq Soulchild.
3 Voices: What’s next for B~Free? Are there any exclusives you can share with us?
B~Free: At the moment I’m finishing up some music I’ve been working on. Over the last year I’ve been creating, producing & writing as much as I can. I plan on releasing a small EP of Neo-Soul tracks before I release my third project, which will be a full-length LP full of various sounds & influences. God willing, you’ll see something by late December/early 2014.
