We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Singer and Actress…Mya!!! Mya is no stranger to the music industry, she’s a Grammy Award Winning artist who has made hits such as My Love Is Like..Wo, Movin’ On, Fallen, Lady Marmalade, and that’s only just to name a few. Mya is back with new music and movies. Lets get to know more about Mya and find out what she’s up to…
3 Voices: You’ve made quite a few hits in your career. What inspired you to become a singer in the beginning? What inspires you to sing now?
Mya: Well, my very first inspiration was my father, starting at the age of 4, singing in church on Easter Eve. He was singing a gospel song by Howard Hewett. I learned all of the words and the melody that night and I wanted so badly to get up on stage, but I was too shy back then. But I knew that I was going to sing some way, shape, or form in my life at an early age because of my father.
A lot of my family sings on my dad’s side and my mom’s side are musicians so it’s just in my blood. It’s a part of my spirit. That’s what keeps me going.
3 Voices: Out of all the songs you’ve made, which song is your favorite? Which song is almost a must to perform whenever you are on the stage?
Mya: That’s hard to say because there are different types of songs. My favorite testimonial song is Nothing At All from the Liberation album, produced by Tricky Stewart. My favorite song to perform live is probably a song called You. A lot of people request me to sing that at their weddings. It’s from my Moodring album. It’s not a single though, but that is my favorite song to perform live.
3 Voices: You are also a dancer & actress. What has been you’re favorite role so far? Will there be more roles in the future?
Mya: My favorite role so far…it’s hard to say. I think the best experience so far was my small role in the movie Chicago, because I got to watch the show play out from beginning to end. From the acting side to the soundtrack side to the recording to rehearsing with the dancers, singing in a recording studio. Because it was a musical and period piece, there were so many different departments and components involved, even the wardrobe department because they had so much studying to do. It was a very intricate project so I enjoyed that experience.
I can’t really say that I’ve had a favorite role yet because they have all been so different. My ideal role would be an assassin where I can do some fight training for months to a year first and train really hard for that and do some fierce stuff, which I think is real sexy. For females to be fighters and killers.
3 Voices: You have worked with a lot of great artists. What were your favorite collaborations? Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Mya: My favorite artist, and I’ve always said this, I’m so eager to get in the studio with a female and whether it’s on the songwriting tip or collaboration. My first choice would be Lauryn Hill. I think she’s a really incredible lyricist and it’s just refreshing to hear it from a woman’s side and actually create with females in the studio because we get each other. Versus pulling from a guy’s perspective because they really don’t know how it feels to be in our shoes. So I would say, Lauryn Hill is first choice.
3 Voices: What artists and songs do you listen to when you’re in the car, working out and etc.? What’s your favorite song that’s out right now?
Mya: When I’m working out I got to get in my fight zone and my warrior zone so I’m listening to trap music. It can be from Bun B to Webbie to OG Bobby Johnson, anything that goes hard where I feel like I’m in the ring for a fight, that’s my ring entrance song. I need that energy to stay motivated.
Now on the sentimental tip, my favorite song out right now is All of Me by John Legend. It moves me in a spiritual way. It’s completely different from how I feel in the gym, but I have that side of me too. So John Legend’s All of Me
3 Voices: You just recently released an a EP called Sweet XVI. What can your fans expect from Sweet XVI? What’s your favorite song from Sweet XVI?
Mya: Well making the EP was really simple because I just pulled from a deep archive of music that I have just sitting around in the vault and a lot of it came from what I recorded with Yonni who I credited with being one of the executive producers of both EPs because we work together a lot. I have other producers that I work with that are on both EPs, Antione Hart is one of them. We all kind of just chopped it up and said these songs work together, let’s go in and compile 4 songs for With Love and 6 songs for the Spring for Sweet XVI and that’s kind of how it came together real simple with songs that existed already.
Now my favorite song off of the Sweet XVI EP is Superwoman because it’s very empowering and it lets people just see another side of a female and understand that there’s more than one dimension or surface, which often women get labeled as. It’s easy to judge people when you don’t know them. Just by the outside or what you think of them and I’m just letting people know, setting the record straight on Superwoman. It’s a feel good song with a 90s throwback flavor to it.
3 Voices: What’s next for Mya? Are there any exclusives that you can share with us?
Mya: Contractually I can’t say too much, but I did do a sci-fi film called Rising last summer so that’ll be out on the Syfy channel. It was really fun. I play the role of marine biologist Lieutenant Comer and a lieutenant in the navy, so that was different kind of role for me. I got to carry guns and machetes and stuff, so that was nice.
Right now I’m just working on the next album. It’s going to be my ninth studio album, and the eighth studio album will be available just as an exclusive on myamya.com, my website, inside of the store.
