We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Rap Artist…YP!!! YP is definitely a artist that you want to become very familiar with. He has worked and been acknowledged by some of the biggest names in the music industry because of his unique rap style and lyrical content. YP recently release his latest mixtape, Backwood Jones that everyone has been talking about all over the internet. Lets get to know YP aka Backwood Jones…
3 Voices: Introduce yourself to the world. Let the world know who YP is and what YP does.
YP: I’m a Hip Hop artist from the Eastside of Chicago. I go through whatever I encounter in life and put it out on wax for the listeners.
3 Voices: What inspired you to become a rap artist? Who are some artists that have influenced your career?
YP: Nothing really inspired me really besides my own environment and wanting to find a way to have a better future for myself and those around me. I’ve always listened to whatever artist painted a picture for me growing up. Whether it be the most negative or the most positive aspect they are touching on, it just always got my attention when people made it clear to me what situations they were going through and I decided myself how it may apply to me and my situation even at an early age. So I would say majority of the icons whether it be the Jay’s or the Nas’s of the world, were my early influences. Where I’m from in Chicago I grew up listening to Bump J who was and still is a prominent figure in the Chicago rap scene even though he’s currently incarcerated.
3 Voices: You’ve worked and met a lot of well-known artists in the music industry. What is your most memorable experience so far?
YP: The most memorable experience is when I was in the same room as Qtip and Nas…and Nas told me I was dope.
3 Voices: Tell us about your latest album, Backwood Jones. What’s your favorite single from Backwood Jones?
YP: I don’t really have a favorite because each song to me took so much time that I basically have come to honestly like each joint because they are so personal to me. If I had to narrow it down though just for the sake of doing it, then it would be a tie between “Bust Yo Moves” and “Real” feat Rockie Fresh.
3 Voices: You recently released the official video for Stop featuring Twista. Tell us how that single came about and the video?
YP: Twista has been the homie for awhile now. We actually were supposed to work on my last effort “Restless” but couldn’t quite match the timing between us. So with no hesitation I asked him about getting on this new project and told him I had the perfect record. He responded like the next day and I sent it through. It was crazy because he was done so fast and actually asked me if I liked it. Now this is coming from Twista though. Me and my homies grew up trying to recite lines from “Adrenaline Rush” and knowing we didn’t have all the words hahaha. So for him to ask me how I felt about his verse was mind boggling at first then I took it as he respects what I do to the point he wants to make sure his contribution is up there. I respect him that much more for that it let me know it wasn’t just him doing a verse, he actually cared about it and wanted opinions before I decided to do whatever needed to be done. When the song was completed I went to ask him about a video and it was like we both had the same idea so it was a no brainer. We knocked that out like maybe a week after the song was done. Much respect to Twista.
3 Voices: What’s next for you? Are there any exclusives you can share with us?
YP: None that I can actually share right now. What I’ve learned in this business is there are way too many broken promises, messed up release dates and just overall more things being said than done. There are things in the works but I feel it maybe too premature to speak on them at this particular moment but I’ll definitely keep you guys in tune.
3 Voices: How can the people reach out to you on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and etc.?
YP: On Twitter and IG my username is YP27, I’m on FaceBook as YP LotteryPick and you can probably Google and still see MySpace profiles, blackplanet, hell whatever they had out there I probably did it.
