We were fortunate to talk ish with Chicago’s very own…Phily!!! Phily is no stranger when it comes to music since he actually grew up with a musical family that performed nationally. Phily is on his way to make a well-known name for himself in the music industry and definitely doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Let’s get to know Phily…
3 Voices: Let the people know who Phily is and what Phily does.
My full name is Philip Christopher Egler; known to most as “Phily”. I’m really just a normal, simple, silly guy. Musically, I am an independent rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and musician. Currently working on several projects, my music/lyrics will tell a story that I once kept quiet about my actual life and experiences. From relationships, jobs, struggle, ups and downs, faith, and family, you’ll find yourself in the story. I want my music to positively uplift and change today’s generation.
3 Voices: What inspired you to pursue a rap career? When did you first start actually rapping? Who are some of your musical influences?
There were a lot of so-called rappers at my school in college and I thought maybe I’d try it out too, just to expand my musical horizons. I was getting tired of hearing so much negativity in rap lyrics. I decided to teach myself how to rap so I could change things up myself. I like to rap about things that I can relate and things that the everyday/average person could relate to as well. I started rapping back in 2010. My musical influences when it comes to rap/hip hop are: Andre 3000, Busta Rhymes, Twista, Missy & Timbaland, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar, and King Los.
3 Voices: You a guy that wears several hats in the music industry as being an artist, songwriter, producer and musician. How do you balance so many roles? Which role do you enjoy most and which role do you feel that’s more challenging?
I feel that it is easy to balance because I grew up in the midst of all of those things. Music comes natural to me. I enjoy songwriting the most. Right now my challenge would be performing on stage by myself, but I’m getting over that the more I perform. It’s fun!
3 Voices: Tell us about your latest mix tape “Act Like U Know.” What’s your favorite song from that mix tape? Let the people who haven’t already downloaded “Act Like U Know” know why they need to download the mix tape now.
“Act Like U Know” was kind of an introduction to let people know that I rap. A lot of people don’t know that I do music at all. People need to download the mixtape because I rapped over familiar beats to catch the listener’s attention but I also added my own flavor lyrically. I think people who haven’t heard it would like it because I talk about things that the average person can relate to. I don’t just talk about money, cars, jewelry, females, or use explicit language. I’d say my favorite song from “Act Like U Know” is Love Songs. That song gave me an opportunity to show a different side of myself, especially for the ladies, I know they’d appreciate that!
3 Voices: You just recent released the video for Juice (Backseat freestyle) featuring Kyo. Explain the concept behind the song and the video. How did you and Kyo get together and make Juice (Backseat freestyle)?
Basically, I’d rather have “the juice” instead of “swag”. To me, juice is when you have power and respect and swag is just being “cool” or looking cool. Juice was a song that I wrote a while ago and once I met Kyo, I thought he would be a perfect fit for the song because it fits his style.
3 Voices: What’s next for Phily? Are there any exclusives you can share with us?
I’m currently working on an EP. That should be dropping in a few months. After that comes the album!
3 Voices: How can the people reach out to Phily on social media sites such as (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and etc.)?
