We were fortunate to talk ish with not only a rap artist but also a young mogul from Chicago…CHI!!! CHI has been on numerous tours, performed countless concerts, worked with a lot of your favorite rappers and singers. He has no plans on stopping or slowing down anytime soon. Let’s get to know CHI a little more…
3 Voices: For those out there who might be unaware, let them know exactly it is that you have done so far.
CHI: I have accomplished some things. Several Tours. Placement Points on some major artist songs, Single sales. Some success as an independent artist distributed through a major company.
3 Voices: You’ve actually been involved in the music industry for quite some time now. How did you get started and what inspired you to even want to get involved?
CHI: Funny. I got started through someone who is like a brother to me who is now my artist Spade Gucci. He was the first person to ever put a pen in my hand and said CHI you can rap! I was like I don’t think so but he pushed me into this as an artist. My big brother and business partner, Blackie, got me started on the business side of music. Just keeping me involved and having input with what he was doing with me as an artist when he signed me in 2010.
3 Voices: What was it like to be a part of BET College Tour in 2010 and 2011 as a performer? What was a memorable experience for you on that tour?
CHI: Just being on the real ticket! Also, having fans in these cities that really could see me on stage night in and night out. Also it was memorable that the acts on the tour who were much bigger than me notarized me and also brought me out during their sets.
3 Voices: You also were a part of Scream Tour 2, 3 and 4 as a performer? What was a memorable experience for you on that particular tour?
CHI: Actually on the Scream Tour 2 and 3 I was Bow Wow’s hype man. It was fun rapping his songs and being on stage with him, great times. Scream Tour 4 was my first tour as a rapper. He made a decision to allow me to open up on every tour date. So I would go out do my 9 minutes and then come back out and hype man for him for his headlining set.
3 Voices: What was it like to work with a legendary Chicago native, R. Kelly? Describe your role as a management rep of R. Kelly.
CHI: Working with R. Kelly is a life time change for me. Just because I learn so much from him. He’s always been a big homie to me. My role as a management rep is, I work side by side with my brother who has managed him for 13yrs. I oversee R. Kelly’s touring and schedule as far as concerts and hosting. I also consult for him as far as sponsorship and endorsements. A&R as far as bringing artist in to work with like the 2Chainz feature. I was very instrumental in that. So many capacities for the King.
3 Voices: You were responsible for a few singles for a lot of people’s favorite artists. Name a few of those artists and singles you were a part of that became some real hits.
CHI: I played big parts in some big records. One of them was Ciara’s “And I” record. Being in the studio and she wasn’t feeling the record. I just pushed her to move forward and told her she should finish and stayed in with her to help her guide the record. Then the record ended up being a single from the label.
Another record was Ja Rule’s “Wonderful” record with R.Kelly and Ashanti. Ja reached out to me because I spent some time in NY and asked me could I get R.Kelly to get on the record. He was going with Lloyd but he wanted a bigger presence. So we made that happen and actually being the single with a video. That was earlier on.
As of late, working with R.Kelly to write the “Dirty Laundry” record for Kelly Rowland. Charlie Wilson’s new single “You Are” and more records that haven’t been released so I can’t speak on them yet.
3 Voices: You’re actually the CEO/Founder of the Committee Music Group, (Shouts out to Davron W. Boyd one of our previous features), what made you decide to start your company and what’s your plans for it?
CHI: I started the company because when I signed my deal in 2010 I had a lot of rappers at the time around me and I could tell they were bitter happy for my accomplishment. After some time I realized it was really no one around me with an outlet so I created one. But not a basement record company. A real rights reserved company that would make an outlet for talent I can work with. The plans are to release our artist like they are major artist with independent budgets. Maybe 2 artist release a season and then go out on the road to tour while the next artist step up. Just working as a machine. I would like to shout out my staff Senior VP Davron W Boyd, VP Mario Cole, Artist Management Fresh Play, VP of A&R Gully and Head Of Promotions Trey. My team is definitely a major part of our success as a brand.
3 Voices: Yes Shouts out to Davron W. Boyd and Fresh Play, who both were featured previously. How can the people reach CHI on the social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and etc.)?
