We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Chicago’s very own…Jazzmine Brooks!!!Jazzmine is an up and coming poet who we came across on twitter, (through another individual) and we had the chance to read her poetry that she writes on her own blog site. Let’s get to know more about Jazzmine…
3 Voices: Tell everybody who Jazzmine Brooks is and what Jazzmine Brooks does.
Jazzmine: I am a teenager from Chicago, and I am a poet. I do tons around school such as Poetry club, and I’m also President of Peer Counseling at my High School.
3 Voices: We like to hear people being involved. When did you first start writing poetry? When did you realize you were a writer?
Jazzmine: I started writing… I’d say about the 2nd or 3rd grade. But I realized Writing is what I was called to do in the 7th grade when I was doing an internship at the Chicago Tribune and came to realize that when writing journalism you can’t add your opinion. I didn’t like that because writing my opinion came naturally & being told my opinion wasn’t needed really annoyed me.
3 Voices: Who are some of your influences?
Jazzmine: In writing, some of my influences are the Grammy Nominated Syleena Johnson. She’s truly gifted, she’s written almost all of her song/ albums and I swear her music is some of the most meaningful and powerful music I’ve ever listened to. I also am influenced greatly by a poetry group by the name of “The strivers row,” in particular the young lady Jasmine Mans that spits with them. She has a way of writing that captures you. Her writing has teeth but, she’s kinda soft-spoken & Fly from what I hear in interviews she’s done.
3 Voices: You have a blog, where you post a lot of personal poems. What inspires you to write these poems?
Jazzmine: A lot of things I’ve been through has inspired me to write those poems. This may be a bit personal but, being a plus size teenage girl, being black & being from the most crime infested city in probably the world (Chicago) I get a lot of crap from people I know & even people I don’t know. But I believe in the power of God & the power of Prayer so often I have to inspire myself, I have to empower myself & I think I have an inner fighter in me who don’t care what people think so, I feel free to post what I want. I feel free to say what I want in my poetry.
3 Voices: What do you hope people get from your poetry? You’ve written quite a few poems, which one is your favorite?
Jazzmine: Honestly I never think of anyone else when I write, unless it’s on purpose. I don’t really write with the objective to inspire or Change the world. I write to shape, change and rearrange my own personal world. If people happen to gain something from my words, Beautiful. If not, I’m not sorry, because all that matters is that I know why that writing came about.
3 Voices: What are your dreams for your writing? Will you be putting out a book of poetry?
Jazzmine: My dreams for my writing are that I can go on a “1 Slam Tour.” lol, I want to go on a poetry tour where I simply go to different towns and I stand in front of crowds of people & do what I do best, spit my poetry. And yes, I want to one day put together a book with a lot of my work in it.
3 Voices: We look forward to that. What’s next for Jazzmine? Are there any exclusives that you can share with us?
Jazzmine: What’s next for me is simply Finishing High school. I want to go to College & simply have a good life. Not too many exclusive things I have going on other than poems I’ll keep secrets for my future book. lol.
3 Voices: And we can respect that, lol. How can the people reach out to Jazzmine Brooks on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and etc.)?
