Dominique Jones aka Chef Nikki is a aspiring pastry chef/baker whose cake and cupcake business has been making a name for itself, better known as Scratch My Batch, formerly known as Nikkis Sweets. Dominique’s cakes & cupcakes has put many smiles on many faces during birthday parties, anniversays, events, gatherings, and weddings. Lets get to know Dominique Jones…
3 Voices: Introduce yourself to the world. Let the people know who Dominique Jones is and what Dominique Jones does.
Dominique Jones: My name is Dominique Jones and I am a 24 year old aspiring pastry chef as well as home based bakery owner of Nikki’s Sweets. I refer to myself as “Chef Nikki” because I consider myself a home chef and one day I want to be a great pastry chef. My grandmother taught me to always keep my faith and trust in GOD and speak my dreams into existence. As a young lady on a mission I tend to do just that. I often have people ask me (including some family members) where’d the name of my business come from because of my first name and I have to explain. “Nikki” is a nick name amongst a few friends of mine as well as co-workers and I love it so I decided to choose this name for my business and brand.
3 Voices: What inspired you to become a baker? When did you first realize you had the talents to bake?
Dominique Jones: My inspiration comes from my beloved grandmothers, Marcia McKinney and Burnette Watson. When I was just a little girl about eight years old I found and fell in love with all things baking. I’d bake cookies, and cakes, and pies with my grandmother Marcia and with Burnette I’d bake cakes, cakes, and more cakes, as well as homemade bread and bread rolls. So I’ve been baking ever since, family and friend’s functions mostly but it wasn’t until a few months ago someone asked my mom if I had a home bakery and from then “Nikki’s Sweets” was born.
3 Voices: Out of all the things you have created, what do enjoy baking the most?
Dominique Jones: I’d have to say I don’t really have a favorite right now I enjoy baking and creating ALL of my sweets. I do however have a love for hearts or double hearts shapes, so I try and sneak them on most of my creations.
3 Voices: What is the typical timeframe for a Nikki Sweets? How much time in advance should a person place their order to receive a creative cake from Chef Nikki?
Dominique Jones: Well since I’m still a start up and my customer base in growing I only need my orders at least two months in advance. I know that some people may not know for sure if they can place so early so I accept no later than a months’ notice as well.
3 Voices: Where would you like to see you and Nikki Sweets in the next 5-10 years from now?
Dominique Jones: In the next five years I will be working towards launching my online bakery and in the mist of that I’d love to study under a great pastry chef. In the next ten years I’ll be working on opening a store front bakery.
3 Voices: What’s next for you? Are there any exclusives you can share with us?
Dominique Jones: The next step for me is culinary school this fall. I will be enrolled at Kendall College in the baking and pastry program and I couldn’t be more EXCITED!!!! I recently worked with a women’s organization by the name of STEP-UP (www.suwn.com), I donated some of my sweets for an event and they were a HIT!!!
