We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Chicago’s very own…Jay Lyn Gatz!!! Jay Lyn Gatz may be an up and coming hip hop artist but his style reminds a lot of old school hip hop rap for the simple fact he speaks the truth in his music. Lets get to know more about Jay Lyn Gatz…
3 Voices: Introduce yourself to the people. Let them know who Jay Lyn Gatz is and what he’s about.
Jay Lyn Gatz: I am… a thinker. I think a lot; at times too much. I think about the bigger picture. I want my music to display different dimensions other than rap, so I study different aspects of art. I like to know what other artists, writers, engineers, producers, graphic artists, and dancers think while they’re doing what they do. My attention to detail gives me a more precise approach. I think that if an artist can only think like a rapper then they lose from the jump.
3 Voices: You talked a bit about growing up in the 90s in your Paris Tokyo remix. How has that influenced you & what special connection do you have to Lisa Left Eye Lopez?
Jay Lyn Gatz: The 90’s has a great impact on the vibe of my music. I draw inspiration from the cartoons, TV shows, music, video games, and movies that I enjoyed as a kid. The hip-hop of the 90’s had a positive aura, but it still had substance with a gritty coating. It’s hard for me to be inspired by most things today because everything seems to lack originality, positive vibes, passion, lasting topics, and the list goes on. This doesn’t just apply to hip-hop; it also applies to all the things I enjoyed as a kid. Things seem to be catered to certain audiences to the point of everything being brain-dead carbon copies of everything. With this said, I don’t plan to recreate the 90’s. I’ll learn from it and integrate it into my style as I do with every other decade.
I’ve always enjoyed Left Eye’s energy. She brought an energy that captivated me. I remember waiting for her verses on TLC songs. I think every 90’s kid remembers her part on the All That intro. She was also a childhood crush of mine.
3 Voices: We’re fans of your music. What inspires you to record?
Jay Lyn Gatz: I record sometimes for no good reason at all. I could be trying something new or just have nothing to do at the time. Writing is another story. My biggest inspiration is everyday events.
3 Voices: You’ve gotten recognition from Kel Mitchell. What other people have enjoyed your music that you are proud of?
Jay Lyn Gatz: Honestly, everybody that listens to my music and gives me feedback makes me proud. So I was particularly proud when my song “Dance Central” got played on Chicago’s radio station WGCI.
3 Voices: Who are some people who you have or would like to work with who’s in the music industry?
Jay Lyn Gatz: I’d like to work with Chance the Rapper, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Drake, and any other artist that brings vibes to a song that I wouldn’t bring on my own. I don’t want my features sounding like rappers going at it all the time. It’s fine sometimes, but it stunts musical growth if done excessively.
3 Voices: We read that you were really inspired to pursue music by your father’s passing? We’re sorry for your loss. How does that drive your music?
Jay Lyn Gatz: It made me realize that life is short and time shouldn’t be wasted. My conversations with people will stick with them for the rest of time when I’m gone. So in my music, I never waste words. I speak and rap with a definite purpose.
3 Voices: What are you currently working on? What can people look forward to from Jay Lyn Gatz?
Jay Lyn Gatz: I’m currently working on a project with Chicago producer Warith Hajj titled “Liquid Heart Syndrome.” It’s an emotionally driven project that details the diminishing of my patience for people and their actions. Be expecting videos, shows, and appearances around Chicago and beyond very soon.
3 Voices: How can the people reach out to Jay Lyn Gatz on the social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and etc.)?
