We are fortunate enough to be able to talk ish with someone who wears many, many hats and still finding new ways to make it to the top…Chicago’s own Fresh Play!!! Fresh Play is involved in the fashion industry with his very own clothing line Cooley Univercity and even is a part of another upcoming clothing line that goes by Doobie Clothing. When he’s not involved with fashion, he’s involved in the music industry as an Artist management Representative. We can definitely respect his hustle and ambitious. Lets find out more from Fresh Play himself.
3 Voices: Let the people know exactly what it is that Fresh Play is involved with and a part of.
Fresh Play: Fresh Play is a movement by himself in both the fashion and music industry. I started my own brand, Cooley Univercity, from the ground up. I help out a lot with Doobie Clothing. I’m a staff member of Fashion Bar Chicago, a new clothing boutique looking to open very soon. Musically, I’m in the management field. I’m the Artist Management Representative for Committee Music Group, a new independent record label, and I’m helping build that from the ground up. I also work closely with the management of Stunt Taylor, a rap artist from the westside of Chicago. Last but not least, I MC parties that DJ Frankie French spin at.
3 Voices: Tell us about how you actually came up with the Cooley Univercity. Explain the whole Cooley Univercity concept.
Fresh Play: I came up with Cooley Univercity after having a dream (literally) of starting my own clothing brand with a group of guys I hung up with a couple years ago. Cooley Univercity is a streetwear brand that promotes something positive. I encourage all students to stay in school with the slogan, “Its Cool to go to School. Whether it’s elementary, high school, or college, you’re never too cool to read and write. Though I am a college dropout myself, I do understand the importance of education. Knowing that school is not for everybody, at the end of the night I just want everybody to chase their dreams…that’s all that I’m doing.
3 Voices: How did the whole Doobie Clothing come about? How did you get involved with that movement?
Fresh Play: Now, Doobie is another story. It’s owned by DJ Bandz and my cousin, Herron. I saw great potential in Doobie Clothing the very first time I laid eyes on it a couple years back when it was owned by someone else and I knew with my marketing and networking skills I could help take it to another level. Herron brought me in and I basically work as his assistant to whatever he needs done.
3 Voices: We see that you have hosted quite a few college parties and parties in general. What’s the most memorable party you have hosted so far?
Fresh Play: The most memorable party Ive hosted was PREMO Day Jam early August. DJ Frankie was spinning, though he wasn’t on the ticket to do so, and I grabbed the microphone and we turn that party up! A lot of people in that party didn’t know who I was prior, but they inquired afterwards. I like to say I made a great impression.
3 Voices: Another hat that you wear is being a part of Committee Music Group (Shouts out to Davron W. Boyd) as an Artist Management Representative. Tell us more about what it is that you actually do. How many artist you have managed so far?
Fresh Play: Well, my job is to manage whatever artist on the label Chi (my boss) sends to me. Right now our main focus at CMG is Spade Gucci. We’re putting together a 7 city tour for him in October to promote his mixtape, “Foreign Dreams”, which is set to release December 20. Another artist I’m managing is Stunt Taylor from Dough Street Ent and I’m in talks with managing couple other artist, nothing official yet.
3 Voices: Out of all the things that you do, how do you balance being in involved in several different things at once? How do you keep things in order?
Fresh Play: Time management. In high school I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA while playing football, editor in chief of the school newspaper, working as a PR for Bremen High School District 228, taking photos for the school yearbook, president of Business Professionals of America, and working a full time job at Kentucky Fried Chicken. So what I’m doing now is normal, just a different field. I gave a speech on time management my senior year in high school and Davonte Stone “The Stone Pony” was one of the judges. I blew him and the other judges away with my speech and landed an internship at V103. It’s all about time management.
3 Voices: Wow! We definitely take our hat off to you. We definitely impress as well. What you hope to accomplish within the next few years with everything it is that you are doing?
Fresh Play: 6 figures, at least!
3 Voices: That’s what’s up! How can the people get in touch with Fresh Play on the social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and etc.)?
Fresh Play: Follow me on Twitter @FreshPlay773 and 3 different Instagram accounts; cooleyunivercity, doobie_clothing, fresherthanyodaddy
