We were fortunate enough to talk ish with Entrepreneur…Nikki Burnett!!! Nikki Burnett is the true definition of a boss! She’s the owner of a sport’s apparel for athletes, owner of a sport’s apparel for mother’s of athletes, owner of a art gallery and a licensed real estate broker. That’s just the business side, on a more personal note, she’s also a mother and wife. As you can see from the introduction, Nikki is one very busy woman. Lets get to know Nikki Burnett…
CITMI: Introduce yourself to the world. Let the people know who Nikki Burnett is and what Nikki Burnett does.
Nikki Burnett: My name is Nikki Burnett, I’m from the Southside of Chicago, born & raised in public housing, The Robert Taylor Homes. I am a Mother, Wife, Child of God as well as the owner/director of Society Art Gallery, Founder of a athletic apparel line named BasketballMom & Hooplyfe Apparel. I’ve also been in the Real Estate Industry for 8 years and now working as a Broker Associate with Luxe Marketing & Sales as well.
CITMI: What was your dream growing in Chicago? What made you get into real estate?
Nikki Burnett: I didn’t realize exactly what I wanted to do until my early 20’s…I decided that being an Entrepreneur and being my own Boss was the best and only way for me. I decided to obtain to my real estate license in 2005 after attending closings of multiple income properties that my husband and I purchased. I realized how important it was to keep the income in the household opposed to allowing an outside Realtor to make money off our purchases.
CITMI: What inspired the creation of BasketballMom Apparel and #HoopLyfe Clothing?
Nikki Burnett: The inspiration behind Basketball Mom came about because I am one. This whole experience has been one filled and fueled by love. One of the greatest days of my life was the day my son Nimari Burnett was born. He loves basketball and I love being his mom. So the whole concept of Basketball Mom is bigger than anything I do with this clothing line. Traveling the country with my son for his games, I’ve met so many moms that feel the exact same way I do. I do this for him (my son) and I do this for them, and all the other basketball moms that stand proudly behind their kids. Support them, love them, and help them follow their dreams. And Hooplyfe was strictly for him because he’s all about that. He lives it, he breathes it, and so does his teammates. They go hard on the court so they deserve a trademark, dedicated to them. That’s how Hooplyfe came about.
CITMI: How do you balance being a successful entrepreneur and being a mom? What’s the biggest challenge you find yourself facing with balancing a career and family?
Nikki Burnett: My balance comes from my support of my husband. Without him I couldn’t put in the long hours and chase my dream. He helps me and allows me to work hard without feeling bad that I may miss a game or class trip. I put my child and family first and I schedule everything else around that. The biggest challenge I face is finding time. Time management is something I have to be good at, because I’m pulled in so many different directions. My son and his dreams are as dear to me as my own, and being a business owner with multiple businesses, requires a lot of my time as well. One of the ways I am able to find balance and time is having a great team that always goes above and beyond the call the duty. They mean the world to me and my family.
CITMI: What would be the best advice that you would give to someone who is interested in being an entrepreneur?
Nikki Burnett: The best advice I can give is to:
1. Educate yourself on whatever business you’re going into. Find out who’s your competition, what are they doing and how can you do it better and more productively, but still maintain your vision in the process.
2. In the beginning you have to have multiple hustles. If you have a day job, don’t quit it because you’ve gone into business for yourself. You still have to eat, and you won’t make much money doing it at first.
Lastly, don’t ever…ever…give up. Giving up is not an option for me.
CITMI: What’s next for you? Are there any exclusives you can share with us?
