This year had plenty of pitfalls. Many people are ready for it to be over. It took so many iconic, legendary, & favorite people. I’m still not over Prince…However, the year was not all bad. It was saved by the great TV, films, & music that came out of it. This year in music was incredible & saw most of our favorite artists releasing music. As we say goodbye to 2016, let’s take a moment to appreciate the great songs that we got out of it. Here were my favorite songs of 2016:
Desiigner – Panda
Zayn – PillowTalk
Zayn broke off & came through. An exciting start to his solo career.
Zay Hilfiger & Zayion McCall – Juju On That Beat
Just gotta dance to it. Made my grown self feel like a kid again.
Rae Sremmurd feat. Gucci Mane – Black Beatles
I don’t even have to say it.
D.R.A.M. feat Lil Yachty – Broccoli
“Ain’t no telling what I’m finna be on!” Gotta love D.R.A.M. & what he brings.
Vince Staples – Prima Donna
Vince is one of my favorite new rappers & he did not disappoint me with this new project.
Ariana Grande feat Nicki Minaj – Side To Side
This song snuck up on me. I didn’t even realize I liked it until I just kept replaying it. It’s something special.
DJ Khaled feat Drake – For Free
It’s Khaled & Drake. Major key.
Josiah Bell – Smoke & Mirrors
Josiah gave us some great songs this year. I still need more from him. I understand he’s just become a father, but I need an album. This is one of the best love songs of the year.
Chloe x Halle – Drop
That beat is everything & they complemented so well with their vocals. So proud of this young ladies & what they’ve been able to create.
H.E.R. – Focus
“Me…can you focus on…me…baby can you focus, on me…”
Ari Lennox – Backseat
I don’t even know what to say about Ari Lennox. She just has it. I know this is just the beginning for her.
Keke Wyatt – Jodeci
We all know that Keke can sing her face off, but for this one she dialed it back a bit. It worked out well. We got this sexy little bop with it’s catchy hook.
BJ The Chicago Kid -Uncle Marvin
It’s so Marvin Gaye I couldn’t believe it when I first heard it. BJ at his best, bringing the soul.
Young M.A. – Ooouuu
M.A. came out swinging & took this year by storm. You know it’s hot when Beyonce puts it in her instavid.
Fat Joe & Remy Ma feat French Montana – All The Way Up
One of the songs of the year. Definitely top 5.
St. Beauty – With You
Puts me in the depths of my feelings, but I love it though.
Bruno Mars – 24K Magic
This song & video was a moment. Bruno came back with a vengeance, a colorful, funky vengeance.
Migos feat Lil Uzi Vert- Bad & Boujee
Look, who doesn’t love this song? Point em out, I want to confront them. Those lyrics… “Raindrops, droptop…” You know the rest.
Maxwell – 1990x
One of my most played songs this year. I just loved it. It gave me everything I needed it. Puts me in the mind of Prince, which could be bittersweet.
dvsn – Hallucinations
A pretty, kind of haunting song. The vocals are killer & it will have you in your feelings.
Anderson .Paak – Come Down
If you had a party this year & didn’t play this song, what were you doing? It’s a jam that you just have to dance to. Once you turn up to it, you won’t ever wanna come down.
BJ The Chicago Kid – Turnin Me Up
Just the thought of this song makes me start to 2 step. I can’t think of a better way for BJ to end In My Mind.
Guordan Banks – Keep You In Mind
It was #1 for a reason. Just a good song that people of all ages can enjoy.
Corinne Bailey Rae – Green Aphrodisiac
Corinne came back with a splash & gave us just what we love her for. Shoutout to KING for their work on the song & the background vocals.
Chloe x Halle – Fall
One of the prettiest songs I have ever heard. Was so happy to see Chloe & Halle coming up this year.
Ro James – Burn Slow
Such a sexy song. A perfect pickup from Permission.
Dreezy feat Jeremih – Body
Dreezy dropped a few heaters this year, but this one was at the top of the list. If you listened to the radio, you heard it.
Beyonce – Sorry
It’s Beyonce. What else need you say? Plus the bonus of a twerking Serena Williams. 2 Queens at the top of the game could only mean greatness.
Rihanna – Needed Me
One of the songs that made Anti such a bop. “Didn’t they tell you that I was a savage?” Rihanna out here creating records to break hearts to.
Cardi B – Foreva
Say what you want to say about Cardi B, but her mixtape was hot. SHe capitalized off of reality TV in the best possible way & proved herself as an artist. I’m ready for the next one.
De La Soul feat Estelle & Pete Rock – Memory of…(Us)
De La Soul is back! What more could you want?
Common feat Stevie Wonder – Black America Again
The visual is so powerful. When I was thinking of the best videos of the year, this one absolutely came to mind.
K.Valentine feat. BJ The Chicago Kid – That’s Real
One of my faves from one of my favorite up & coming artists. Both artists on this song created something memorable that will be getting play for quite some time. Hopefully, it gets K the recognition she deserves.
Sevyn Streeter – Before I Do
Love this song. So pretty & smooth. Puts me in the mind of Aaliyah & 90s R&B in general. So good.
Phresher – Wait A Minute
This song right here got me immediately. There was just something about it from the jump that pulled me in & I found myself listening to it over & over again. What can you say? It’s just a hit.
Kehlani – Gangsta
It fit so perfectly with Suicide Squad & just really showcased Kehlani’s talents. One of the best I’ve heard from her.
Schoolboy Q feat Kanye West – That Part
Another undeniable bop. You just have to jig to it, not to mention how memorable the lyrics are. “Walking living legend, yeah I feel like Kobe.”
Kanye West feat Teyana Taylor – Fade
The song rattled the Chicago in me with it’s strong House music influence, but that video.Teyana deserves all of the recognition she got for that video because it was definitely one of the biggest moments of the year. She killed it!
Solange – Don’t Touch My Hair
The title says it all. It’s a great song for Black women to relate to & just a strong, necessary statement.
Chance The Rapper feat Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz – No Problem
I was bopping to this one all year. I can put on right now & still feel the same way. It just feels good & makes you want to grind on your own terms.
Kanye West feat The-Dream, Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin & Chance The Rapper – Ultralight Beam
What can you even say about this one? It’s Hip Hop, it’s Gospel. It’s just everything. By far, in my opinion, the best song on The Life of Pablo. 3 words: Chance. The. Rapper
Childish Gambino – Redbone
It took me a minute to get into the first single, but Redbone was an instant hit with me. Both in the context of the album, & just in general, the song is so creative, unique, & heartfelt.
KING – In The Meantime
The whole album is amazing & their animated videos always provide a great addition to the already phenomenal songs.
Rihanna – Kiss It Better
As soon as I heard the song I was like, yep. Just yep. It’s one of those songs that you just instantly love. I’m sure plenty of babies born this year & into the next can thank this song for their birth.
Solange – Cranes In The Sky
Cranes In The Sky is gorgeous in all ways. The production, the lyrics, the vocals, the visuals. It is a beautiful example of what the album A Seat At The Table is as a whole. Just incredible.
Beyonce – Formation
Last, but certainly never least, Beyonce’s Formation. It’s an anthem. You couldn’t possibly think about this year & not think about what Formation & Lemonade meant to it. It’s just one of those songs.
I probably forgot some, but those were the ones that got the most play from me. What were your favorites of this year?
