Last night we went out to Mars Gallery at 1139 W. Fulton Market for the release of Rahkal Shelton’s autobiography Dreams Bigger Than Texas: A Story of Purpose, Perseverance, and Growth Into Womanhood. It was a very inspiring event full of supportive people.
For those unfamiliar with Rahkal Shelton, she is an Author, Mentor, & Media Specialist who has worked for a variety of different media outlets, including CNN. She has had to surmount so many obstacles throughout her life to get to her current level. Dreams Bigger Than Texas is a long time coming. It is her very first book. She began to write the book many years ago & found that as she grew & lived life she added more & more. Rahkal used a Kickstarter campaign to raise the money necessary to self-publish her memoir. Not only did she reach her goal, but she raised even more with the help of nearly 150 backers & was able to make last night’s event happen.
It was a great event, full of Rahkal’s family, friends, & supporters. The book was available for sell & everyone there was dressed to impress. Although she is originally from the South Side of Chicago, she has moved on to Atlanta, yet she was still able to pack the space. There were excerpts of the book on easels around the room, a DJ playing music, as well refreshments for everyone to enjoy as Rahkal walked around greeting all of the guests. Before long the entertainment began, lead by the emcee NoTryDo Sincere. He brought everyone into order & brought up performers Toni Mono Flow, who is a mentee of Rahkal who has become a mentor, & rapper Christopher Lemark. Toni Mono Flow talked about his relationship with Rahkal as a mentee & dedicated a poem to the novel. Rahkal came forward to share some words about the book & what it took to make it happen. The book, like her life, is a testament to will & endurance.
Next there was a break for music, refreshments, & photos with the author. then Chris Lemark came & did an acapella performance, getting the crowd hyped up. There were two raffles of goodies & in the time the event took place all of the books there were sold out. It was a very successful & positive event that felt like a family affair. It was incredible to watch as someone’s dream came true after developing the book over the course of nine years. From being raised in poverty on the South Side of Chicago in a home full of drug abuse & violence, to going off to Texas Southern University & going on to work for CNN, time & again Rahkal Shelton has shown that you can never count anyone out. This book is important for all of the people who have dreams bigger than Texas.
The book will be available to the general public tomorrow. For more information go to dreamsbiggerthantexas.com. Get yourself a copy of this incredible story.
