Chicago stand up! Chicago native Lena Waithe has created a show for the city called The Chi. The show will be on Showtime starting Sunday January 7th at the 10/9 central.
We all know Chicago has a lot going on at all times. Beyond the headlines, Chicago has a certain culture about it. As diverse, & often segregated, as the city is, it has a lot of spirit. There have been shows to a certain extent set in Chicago, but it feels like they’re either on the North side or from people who aren’t really from here. I immediately became excited hearing that Lena was doing a show for the city. And Common is involved. I just knew they were going to represent. The show’s description says, “A fateful event sends shockwaves througha community on the South Side of Chicago and connects the lives of Brandon, Ronnie, Emmett, and Kevin wholly unexpected ways. The ensemble cast includes Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Jacob Latimore, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Tiffany Boone, and Armando Riesco.” It sounds like it should be interesting. I’ll definitely be tuning in.
Anybody who loves Chicago will be the first to acknowledge its pitfalls, but at the same time know that this is a great city. We need good representation from within the Black community. We need to see ourselves on that screen in that light. So I hope that The Chi will offer us a much needed platform to the inner workings of the city. Shout out to Lena Waithe & the cast.
There are a few weeks until the premiere, but following the advanced showing in Chicago the other day, the series premiere has been made available on YouTube. No telling how long it’ll be there so watch the series premiere of The Chi below:
