For many people the day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, the day with all of the great sales. Well this Black Friday many have decided that instead they will make a statement.
Many have decided to protest today for a few reasons. Wal-Mart workers are protesting their working conditions & have been staging sit-ins since Wednesday night. Following the decision in Ferguson not to indict Mike Brown’ s killer, many in the black community have decided that black life is not valued & so neither should the black dollar. They have declared that they will black out black Friday.
It started last night with protests outside of Targets & Wal-Marts in St. Louis. There was word that a few stores even closed down because of protests. The organizers have asked that the black out go through the weekend & that people instead only buy from black-owned businesses.
People have different perspectives on the protests. Some people believe that it will only ham workers more because a poor showing in Black Friday will mean less hours & less money for workers. Others simply don’t see the point & don’t truly believe people will do it. They see Black Friday as an opportunity for people of lesser means to be able to get nice things for their children.
This protest is another measure to be disruptive. Protesters believe that the more disruptive they are the more sure it is that they will get results. Protests have taken place in 37 of the 50 states with people of walks of life. People still believe justice can be served & will not stop until it is.
On another note, I would just like to dispute the meme that has been floating around about the origin of Black Friday. It was not the day slaves or whatever People are saying. It’s called Black Friday because originally it was seen as a negative due to the chaos it incited. Eventually it caught on & took to mean the day businesses went in the black or turned large profits. The term began in the 1960s. Black people have suffered a lot of horrible things & slavery’ s history continues to effect us in many ways, however, that is not one. Don’t believe things just because someone makes a meme that says it. There is not basis for that theory.
Whether you decide to shop this weekend or not, one thing is very clear. People are fed up & are finding whatever way they can to incite change. We will see what the fallout will be. Either way I don’t think this will be last we see of these kinds of protests.
