Last night was the season premiere of VH1’s Black Ink Crew. But this season, Black Ink Crew has found its way to CHICAGO!!! I was super excited to see tons of familiar streets, faces & brands on the television screen – NMOL & Chicagorilla was displayed heavy on the screen. And what I like most about the show is that it shines a completely different light on Chicago than it normally is perceived as.
The violence of Chicago is mentioned & displayed on Black Ink Crew Chicago but not in any way, shape or form is it glorified. As a matter of fact, Ryan who is a tattoo artist as well as the owner of 9Mag (the name of the tattoo shop) shares the story how his sister, Nova Henry & 10 month old niece, Ava Curry life were taken – which literally brought tears to my eyes. What I admire about Ryan is how he turned a heartbreaking situation into a motivational drive. With the support & contributions from his family, Ryan was able to create 9Mag in honor of his sister who he just previous talked about the idea with & was supposed to receive assistance from before her untimely death.
Like many reality shows, there’s drama. That’s what makes the show most entertaining for most. Yeah things definitely got heated in 9Mag between Don’s girlfriend, Ashley & 9Mag’s manager, Charmaine. It literally goes down in 9Mag – especially in the bathroom. Don is still young & finding himself in life. He was a former athlete before becoming 9 Mag’s tattoo artist, Phor’s assistant – who is also his brother. Phor has his brother’s back no matter what. When Ashley entered into 9Mag & immediately started attacking Don who grinding on Charmaine, it was Phor who rushed in between & who went outside with the two to talk. I’ve heard Phor’s music before & was under the pleasure that was something that he wanted to pursue heavy verses tattooing. I’m curious to see if he’ll be successful able to manage both & if given the opportunity to further one, which one would it be.
The ladies of 9Mag, Charmaine, Kat & Danielle are true party girls – they just want to have fun. They each manage to get their jobs done but they also tend to flirt & joke around during the process. There’s nothing wrong with it if it’s not preventing money from being made. Charmaine is the most outspoken one out of the ladies & goes directly for what she wants without any hesitation or filter. Personally I think Kat & Phor are just making each other jealous. They’re both attracted to one another but haven’t made any official moves at the moment. Danielle hasn’t done much yet. She basically just does her job; however, Charmaine is her cousin & they have a very close bond – something bound to go down between the two eventually.
Can’t forget about Van. It’s a two for one package for 9Mag. He does tattoos & he can also be easily mistaken as a bodyguard. Van is ready to attack at any given moment & he has already – toss that disrespectful customer right out the door without asking any questions. Word of advice, don’t try it with Van or anyone from 9Mag.
I’m excited about the season & definitely will be tuning in to VH1 Monday nights for every episode. And one thing that no one can deny about 9Mag is that they have some amazing tattoo artists. What are your thoughts about Black Ink Crew Chicago?
