I’m so ready for this year to be over. It’s the last day & it still ain’t fast enough. I feel like this is one of those years that I’m gonna blank out in the future. It was so challenging & really pushed us all to the limit. There were some highs, but those lows were killer. Then had the nerve to be a leap year like we needed an extra day of this. It was a couple of days this year that I just had to curl up in the fetal position to get through. But at the same time I feel the stronger for it.
As always, we here at Can I Talk My Ish would like to thank everybody for supporting us for another year. It was really amazing & we have to thank everyone who reads, shares, submits, reaches out, & just help us keep this thing going. We covered so many awesome events including the Chicago AutoShow, the Black Women’s Expo, Gucci’s welcome back concert, Aahh! Fest & so many other great experiences. We’re so grateful & cannot wait to see where this thing takes us next.
As far as what happened in general in our country & with so many of our heroes, we just have to do our best to cope. Don’t allow yourself to become bitter about it, just try to be a good thing that is happening out here. We need as much light as we can possibly get. If anything we should have learned how fragile & uncertain things are. Live as best you can. Do what makes you happy, deal with good people, & don’t stress, because stressing won’t fix anything. We’re about to face even more challenges, but we made it through this year & we can make it through what’s next. We just gotta stay woke & keep holding people accountable.
We lost so many this year, it breaks my heart to even think about. I’m still not over Prince. Alan Rickman, Natalie Cole, Maurice White, Phife Dawg, Gene Wilder, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, George Michael, Alan Thicke, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Tommy Ford, Vanity, Chyna, Kimbo Slice, Anton Yelchin, Alexis Arquette, Craig Sager, Leonard Cohen, Sharon Jones, Florence Henderson, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Big Ang, Doris Roberts, Elie Wiesel, Garry Marshall, Bill Nunn, Shawty Lo, Harper Lee, Billy Paul, & too many more did not make it out of this year. All I know is that the other side is lit! Rest well to all of those who were lost & condolences to all the living affected.
There were some cool things that happened this year too, though. The Cubs won the World Series! As a Chicagoan who is admittedly a Sox fan (I mean, Southside, what you think?), I was still really happy for the Cubbies. Beyonce stayed happening throughout this whole year. The Formation world tour was everything & I got what I needed from it. TV & movies were especially good this year. The movie Moonlight alone could have carried us, then Fences happened & I still haven’t recovered. TV was very Black & lovely. From Atlanta to Insecure to Queen Sugar, Underground, Luke Cage, Chewing Gum, Pitch, Lethal Weapon, This Is Us, & all of the incredible shows that were already on my DVR stayed busy. There were also the So Gone Challenges & other challenges to make us laugh & get us through.
Some of the major people this year really gave us hope in the midst of everything else that was happening. Chance The Rapper really shone this year & made Chicago very proud. Joanne the Scammer also had an ICONIC year. Miss Shirleen kept us giggling. Gucci returned to us & came out not only looking like money, but grinding like he never left. Mahershala Ali was everywhere, Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Luvvie judged us all in the best way, Ava Duvernay came through, the Olympics was full of Black greatness, Dak Prescott & Ezekiel Elliott dominated on the field, & so many other deserving people finally got recognition. These people were the silver linings in so many clouds this year. Grateful for them.
2016 was already going to be difficult being the last year of the Obama administration. Don’t even call me on his last day, I’ll be in mourning. I can’t say I’m upset that this year is done. Not to say that 2017 isn’t already looking a bit down, but I know that I’m going to push through & make sure that I step out & execute the gifts that I have been given. Now is the time to step up, step out, & make it happen. What happens next is up to us, so let’s use the closing of this year to energize us. I mean for more than the first few weeks. We have worked to do. Let’s get after it.
